How do I look after my mobility scooter batteries?

Here at Quingo Scooters we always want to share with you ways that you can get the most out of your mobility scooter.

One question that mobility scooter users are always asking is “How do I look after my mobility scooter batteries?” and today we want to help answer that question. We’ll look at how you protect the lifespan of your mobility scooter’s batteries and how you can maximise their longevity.

What’s the best way to charge my mobility scooter battery?

  1. Place your Quingo in an area that is dry well ventilated and make sure that there is a power point nearby.
  2. Switch your vehicle off and remove the key when charging.
  3. Turn off the mains switch. Never connect or disconnect the charger with the mains on.
  4. Make sure that the pins are lined up when connecting the charger plug to the scooters charging socket. They should connect easily – don’t try and force them.
  5. After charging: Switch off the mains and remove the battery connector when fully charged. Don’t leave the charger plugged in with the power off as this will discharge your battery.

How often should I charge my mobility scooter battery?

Charge your Quingo overnight (at least 8-12 hours- depending on model) the day before you wish to use it. If you are using it daily, put the vehicle back on charge even if you have only travelled a short distance. When unused you should still recharge your batteries at least every 2-3 weeks to keep them in good condition.

If you don’t intend to use your vehicle for longer periods of time (i.e. 3 months or more), you should charge the batteries fully, then remove the batteries from the vehicle and store them in a dry area. Never remove them unless they are fully charged. When you return them to the vehicle, top them up before use. Remember – don’t charge your Quingo in the open since it may rain and the battery charger is not waterproof.

When will I know to change my mobility scooter battery?

Consider replacing your batteries when you notice they no longer perform as you would wish. For some this may be after 12 months of regular use, for others it may be several years.

Does tyre pressure affect my mobility scooter battery?

Yes – all you need to do is regularly check that your tyre pressure is set correctly according to your scooters handbook. You can do this by visiting a local petrol station or garage or even buy your own gauge from somewhere like Halfords. You can also buy cheap powered pumps that include a gauge and will run off  a 12v battery, such as the ones in your Quingo, and these can be found in shops like Argos.

Will the weather make a difference to my mobility scooter battery life?

Using your scooter in the winter will impact battery life, bear this in mind before you set out on longer journeys as you may need to charge the batteries more frequently and your range may be decreased. Make sure batteries are fully charged before you set off.

Does what I carry on my mobility scooter impact the battery?

Yes – it’s always a good idea to carry only essential items with you on your scooter. The more weight your Quingo carries the harder the motor and batteries will need to work and the sooner the batteries will need charging.

Here at Quingo Scooters we love about hearing our customer’s reviews and experiences! In this blog post we wanted to share some of the reviews left for us in the New Year.

“The future of mobility”

On the 11th January, one Quingo user left feedback on the Air model, saying that Quingo were “Excellent, particularly in the area where they make sure that the customer is aware of the traffic they may interact with, and that their memories are good enough so they may be in charge of a Quingo”

He went on to add that “I have had NHS wheelchairs for years, from my 30’s. NHS offered nothing but heavy black things. My husband said they look so awful and decided I deserved something smarter. The Quingo is that and more, it is light, turns on a sixpence and goes up and down curbs with no problem. The Quingo is the future of mobility.”

“No Fuss”

Another Customer kindly commented on the service they received when buying their Classic: “No Fuss service, delivered when they said they would.” In terms of the Classic itself, this customer thought it was a “Comfortable sturdy scooter, everything was within easy access and it was easy to use”.

Of the service they received with their Toura, another customer comments that it was “Very easy to adapt appointments at short notice owing to health problems, and a very friendly and helpful point of contact”. Also nice to hear was that this customer felt like they had “got their freedom back” after purchasing their Toura.

Our last customer in this round up was particularly impressed with his Classic model, saying he “couldn’t do without my scooter now. Best thing I’ve ever done! Thank you!” Commenting on our service: “It was nice to get a phone call asking how I was getting on with my scooter.”

Using your Quingo in the Snow

Here at Quingo, we know that confidence is extremely important when you are out and about on your scooter during the cold winter months.

You can rest assured that all the technologies behind your 5 wheel scooter are continually at work, up and down every hill and every kerb, enabling you to continue to use your scooter safely and maintain your independence.

With snow and icy conditions forecast across the country, you might fear that it will be too difficult to get out and about and carry on with your essential everyday journeys. However, this is not the case when it comes to using your 5 wheel Quingo.

 

In fact, using your scooter is one of the very safest ways to get around in ice and snow. It makes staying connected with your community, family and friends so much easier to do – even in the treacherous weather. It goes without saying that making your journeys on your scooter is much safer than walking anywhere.

To ensure that your scooter remains in optimum condition we recommend that you don’t leave it out in the snow or freezing conditions for prolonged periods. This will affect the performance of your batteries. Keeping it stored in a safe, dry, secure environment with adequate protection is a must.

If you’re planning some wintery trips out in the snow, don’t forget about the all-weather canopy, which will keep you and your Quingo dry whilst you’re out and about. If you have a compatible model, you may find that heated handlebars make that journey a little more comfortable as well.

In addition Quingo’s Kerbmaster technology not only prevents tipping as they do on most traditional scooters but also eliminates the possibility of your scooter being stuck on a high kerb which could easily leave an ordinary scooter stuck out in a busy road.

Insurance for your Quingo Scooter: Complete Peace of Mind

Hello and welcome back to the Quingo scooter users blog. In this blog post the Quingo team share some useful information about mobility scooter insurance and why it is so vital.

It is important that you enjoy yourself when out and about and that you benefit from using your mobility scooter as much as you can without worry.

Scooter Insurance offers you the peace of mind to do just that every time you go out. Whilst the law states that you are not obliged to have insurance, it is strongly recommended – both by the Quingo team and the Department for Transport that you do.

 Why get insured?

It’s all too easy to put off getting insurance and many people do but we strongly advise that you don’t. It is far better to protect both your investment and yourself and get covered right away. The process is very straightforward and our friends at First Senior Insurance will happily take you through the application process.

What does good insurance cover include?

Insurance should at minimum provide cover for you and your Quingo in the unlikely event of an accident, for theft and cover vandalism. In addition, check that the public liability covers the risk of potentially expensive personal compensation pay-outs!

It is also worth noting that, just as with cars, not all mobility scooter insurance cover is the same, so it is good to have an idea of what cover you should expect. First Senior Insurance who specialise in mobility scooter insurance have cover called Triple Star Insurance. Check that your insurance covers all these areas:

  • Accidental Damage Cover
  • Fire Damage Cover
  • Flood Damage Cover
  • Loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft
  • Storm Damage Cover
  • 40 Day world-wide cover
  • Public liability up to £2 million
  • Temporary cover to loan equipment of similar value whilst your product is with the dealer/manufacturer
  • ‘Get-you-home’ expenses following an accident
  • New for old replacement if the damage exceeds 60% of the replacement value during the first 24 months, assuming product is new
  • No excess
  • No claims bonus scheme
  • Carer contingent liability
  • Temporary hire costs cover
  • Personal Injury benefit up to £2000

 Roadside Recovery Cover

You should also consider Roadside Recovery if you wish to avoid unnecessary worry. Punctures or mechanical problems for example are rare but should you ever find yourself needing help recovering your scooter and getting it and yourself home, it is well worth considering. First Senior Insurance offer such a service which provides a reliable recovery service 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Extended Warranty Cover

Any new Quingo in the current range comes with a comprehensive, 3 year Warranty so most new Quingo owners won’t need to worry, however for those with older models or those who buy a second hand scooter an extended warranty is for you. These cover your mobility scooter against unforeseen electrical and mechanical failure when the manufacturer’s warranty has expired. They provide you with peace of mind and multiple durations are available. Check that the policy covers all relevant call out charges plus labour and parts costs.

In summary, the most important piece of advice is to ensure you have insurance in place from the day you begin using your scooter and we can’t stress that enough.
