Picking your next day out can be hard when there’s so much choice! Here at Quingo Scooters we’ve created a handy guide to some of the country’s best Accessible Attractions. From a fast-paced day in the biggest cities to something a little quieter in the countryside, we’ve got plenty to choose from!

This week we’re taking you down south to Essex, home to beautiful countryside views and only a short journey from London. This week’s Accessible Attraction is Chelmsford Museum – definitely one for those who love their history!

What’s on offer?

The Chelmsford Museum is situated in a large Victorian house, which you’ll find in a public park. There are exhibitions that cover geology, archaeology, numismatics, local history, fine and decorative art and natural history. The Essex Regiment exhibition can also be found here.

The story of Chelmsford exhibition takes visitors through the history of Chelmsford through Chelmer Valley from the Ice Ages to the present day, visiting the major archaeological monuments and sites in the district along the way. Some of the magnificent sites you’ll see here are Ice Age mammal remains, Bronze Age earthwork at Springfield, Chelmsford cathedral and many more interesting artefacts!

The Essex Regiment exhibition showcases the story of the county Regiment from its origins in 1741. In this exhibition, it explains the nickname ‘The Pompadours’ and follows the Regiment’s fortunes throughout major conflicts in the British Empire, World Wars and the Korean War. There are various Regimental trophies displayed, including the famous Salamanca Eagle – a Napoleonic standard captured from the French in 1812.

The Second World War (1939-45) exhibition details the work of the 2nd Battalion (the ‘Pompadours’) and how they were first in the field. They then moved on to France in September 1939, and were part of the retreat to, and withdrawal from Dunkirk in May 1940. They landed on D Day in 1944, and fought through without respite to the final capitulation of Germany in May 1945.

Getting there

Travelling to Chelmsford Museum is very convenient from the Capital, as there is a frequent service by train from London Liverpool Street to Chelmsford on the Anglian (East Coast) line. The museum is located just a short distance from the railway station. Public buses run regularly, the nearest stop is adjacent to Moulsham Street opposite The Rising Sun public house. An accessible day out

Chelmsford Museum’s staff are all trained in accessibility, and are always available to offer assistance if required. The museum has dedicated parking for blue badge holders and is fully accessible for scooter users. On the lead up to the main entrance of the museum, there are gentle slopes and smooth surfaces with automatic doors at the main entrance. How Can I Look After My Mobility Scooter in Winter?

Having a Quingo Mobility Scooter can give you so much freedom over the chilly winter months, especially in the run up to Christmas!

However, you may be thinking about how you can look after your mobility scooter in winter and if it’s any different from usual. Yes, it is! In this post we’ve put together some top tips to ensure your mobility scooter runs smoothly this winter.

Maintaining your mobility scooter in winter can be done in a few simple steps. The below tips will ensure safety and optimal performance of your scooter.

Check your mobility scooter’s power supply

As you probably would have guessed, the cold temperatures of winter can affect your scooter’s power supply. By storing your scooter in a warmer area when it’s not in use, you can ensure the battery remains in a good condition.  However, if storage in a warmer area isn’t an option for you, simply be extra vigilant. Check your mobility scooter’s power level before every trip, even if it was full the night before. Taking your scooter out for a spin most days will keep your battery healthy too, so the more you use it the better!

Layer up – you and your scooter!         

When you’re sat on your mobility scooter, you will feel the cold more as you’re sat still. Wearing lots of thinner layers are a good idea, and thermals are even better. Don’t get caught out in the rain and snow either – make sure your outerwear has a hood! Speaking of outerwear, waterproofs are best as they can reduce wind chill.

Plan a safer, alternative route just in case

It’s essential to make sure the route you plan to take on your mobility scooter is safe as the winter weather takes its toll. Even though you may have a stable mobility scooter, it’s always best avoiding a route that has steep inclines or other hazards when the ground is icy. It may take a bit longer, but it’s safer to consider a route that’s more flat.

Stay in the loop

It’s a good idea to take a mobile phone out with you when you go out on your scooter, just in case there are any unforeseen hiccups. Your mobile should have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) number in its phone book. Alternatively, if you don’t have a mobile phone, you can always carry a small book of contact numbers with you.

Handiscover is unique in that it has a unique rating system, grading accommodation depending on your level of mobility. This community-based holiday booking platform is great in that it not only lists hotels but also apartments, houses and B&B’s. It’s really easy to use and user friendly, and there definitely isn’t a lack of in-depth information on each property listing.

Limitless Travel

Angus runs Limitless Travel, and he’s really passionate about finding stress-free places to stay. The site is fairly new, but has a nice design and is easy to use. On here you’ll not only find places to holiday, but also accessible attractions.

Here at Quingo Scooters we love finding brand new places for an exciting, interesting and accessible day out! Today we’re heading to Cornwall, to the Eden Project.

The Eden Project

Described by some as the eighth wonder of the world, The Eden Project is an exciting and inspiring playground where you can explore our relationship with nature.

The complex is made of two big enclosures consisting of adjoining domes that house thousands of plant species. Eden’s Rainforest Biome is home to the largest rainforest in captivity. Additionally the Mediterranean Biome, with its many aromatic plants, is a definitely experience for the senses. Inside these two biomes are plants that are collected from many diverse climates and environments.

The Eden Project also has an outside botanical garden, which is home to many plants and wildlife native to Cornwall and the UK in general. These plants provide an important and interesting backstory, for example, some have a prehistoric heritage.

What’s on?

There are many exciting things happening at The Eden Project depending on when you choose to visit, but here’s a few things going on at the moment.

Dinosaur Uprising – Running from 23rd July until the 4th September, this exhibition enables you to uncover fascinating facts about land-roaming giants, monsters from the deep and ancient creatures of the skies. You can come face to face with some life-size moving dinosaurs and marvel at their monstrous features. This is great for the whole family.

Festival of Food – This runs from the 9th-11th September, and can’t be missed for the foodies out there! The line-up of includes demos by famous chefs, such as Phil Vickery and John Whaite. There is the chance to sample delicious food and drink from local and regional producers including Knightor Wine, Buttermilk and The Wonky Kitchen. There are different chef demonstrations on different days, so be sure to check the website for scheduled events to make sure you catch the right one!

Storytelling – This runs every day in high season at 12pm and 2pm. Fascinating tales are told by The Eden Project’s wonderful storytellers in the lovely surroundings of the Citrus Grove inside the Mediterranean Biome. The tales range from local Cornish folk stories to fables about rainforest plants all the way from the amazon. Another great exhibition for the whole family and those that love to hear a good story!

Accessibility

The Eden Project is fully accessible to all. Upon arrival there are shuttle buses that run from the car parks, and a Land Train operates from the Visitor Centre to the base of the pit. These are free and can accommodate wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Inside The Eden Project there are lifts from the highest point on site to the lowest. All toilets throughout are fully accessible and have dedicated facilities for people with multiple disabilities.

The Eden Project have their own access guide which is great for reference before your visit. In there are recommended routes around the site for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Quingo’s Top Tips for Driving Your Mobility Scooter

Sometimes it’s great to go back to basics to make sure that you’re having the best possible experience on your mobility scooter. Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to be safe and comfortable when driving their mobility scooters, so we’ve put together some top tips to prepare you for your best journey yet!

  • Before driving your mobility scooter, it’s important to get as comfortable as possible. Remember to always place your feet on the footplates.
  • Now you can switch on your mobility scooter. This is the point where you should check to see if the battery level indicator is in the green area. If not, make sure to charge your scooter. We’ve put together a useful guide to charging your mobility scooter on the blog previously.
  • Pull in your right hand accelerator lever slowly to enable your scooter to move off. The more you pull the lever, the faster your scooter will go. As you get more accustomed to the lever’s functionality, you can increase the speed.
  • To brake, release the lever. If you become unsure or if you feel unsafe then release the lever.
  • When turning, slow down and look in the direction you wish to travel. If you come up to a blind corner you should sound your horn.
  • If you’re taking any medication at all, it’s very important that you check with your doctor that you’re ability to drive your mobility scooter won’t be affected.
  • When it’s time to get off your mobility scooter, make sure that you’ve stopped safely on a flat area. Remember to turn off the ignition and remove the key before you get off.
