Accessible getaways abroad: Accessible Boston, USA

If you’re going to explore New England, then Boston will be one of the highlights of your trip. There are few more historic cities in the US, and it is a fascinating place to explore for a few days. There are plenty of great galleries and museums, historic sites to visit, and also some delicious New England seafood to sample.

Wherever you are traveling in the USA, public buildings are now required by law to be fully accessible to those of us with different mobility needs. But as always, it pays to call ahead if you’re not sure.

Enjoy Boston’s unique history

Boston’s Freedom Trail is only around two and a half miles long, but it packs a huge amount of history in. This is a city that played a significant role in the birth of the USA itself, and the trail takes in 16 historically important sites along the way.

As you pass along the trail you’ll see historic churches, meeting places and museums that will help you to piece together the history of the American Revolution and the birth of the nation.

The trail itself is fully accessible, and while not all of the historic sites it passes are, many (such as Boston Common) are easy to get around. You can follow the trail yourself (here’s a map) but if you book a guided tour through the Freedom Trail Foundation all of their tours are accessible.

Tuck into some New England seafood

The people of Boston are quite rightly proud of their cuisine – and their seafood chowder in particular. There are plenty of places to try it out, but our favourite restaurant has to be the Legal Harborside.

It’s a modern, accessible building, but this restaurant’s clam chowder feels traditionally New England. It’s one of the best we’ve tried, with salt pork, fresh clams and a peppery kick.

Visitors from the UK might also be interested in a little taste of home – Boston does a mean version of that great British tradition, fish and chips. We’d recommend the historic Warren Tavern in Charlestown.

Head to Fenway

Boston is famous for many things – but one of its proudest institutions is the Red Sox. If you’re interested in baseball and want to see them at their historic home at Fenway Park, then take a look at their dedicated accessibility page here, or give them a call on 617-226-6000. The team are a significant part of Boston’s cultural history.

Of course, not everyone is a sports fan. But the Fenway area itself is also an interesting place to explore, even if you don’t make it to the ballpark. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum isn’t far away (more of that in a moment). And there is also the incredible Museum of Fine Arts – which has its very own butterfly garden and is fully accessible to all. 

Finally, if you’re in need of refuelling after all that culture (or sports), head to Restaurant Row on Peterborough Street for some great New England cuisine.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Isabella Stewart Gardner was a well-known Boston art collector and socialite. She was known for being unconventional and famously once appeared at a society event wearing a headband saying ‘Oh, you Red Sox’.

She caused quite a stir in her day – but one of her longer-lasting legacies is this wonderful museum. It is home to her incredible art collection, including treasures from the Dutch Masters and Renaissance painters.

The museum itself is in a beautiful historic building and is largely accessible with lifts and elevators, but there are some narrow doorways in the older wings of the museum. The gardens are also varied and peacefully secluded, and accessible for most visitors.

Did you know?

The Boston University Bridge is supposedly the only place in the world where a boat can pass underneath while a train passes above it, while a car travels on the road above that… and a plane passes overhead.

Getting to Boston

There are regular non-stop flights from the London airports to Boston, and non-direct ones from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Boston Logan airport is accessible for those of us who use mobility scooters, but the team there recommend –  as at any airport – that you remind your airline of your particular needs before you fly. There is also a free customer service line at the airport – just call 1-800-23-LOGAN. There is more accessibility information here.

If you need to get between terminals, then the free and accessible Massport shuttle service is a great option – the buses have a lift to help you board. To get into Boston itself from the airport, just use the fully accessible MBTA subway.

Travelling with scooters

In the latest in our new series of blogposts on the most accessible cities in Europe, we are visiting a place that has an obsession with all forms of wheeled transport: Amsterdam. It’s a city that loves bicycles, so as a consequence it is no surprise that it is also a fantastic destination for those of us who use a mobility scooter or wheelchair to get about. Add in an extensive and accessible public transport system and the fact that it is one of the flattest cities in Europe and you can see why it makes for the perfect accessible getaway.

So, with that in mind, here is our guide to great accessible things to do while you are in Amsterdam.

Visit the Van Gogh Museum

It is hard to think of any greater Dutch icon than Vincent Van Gogh (except Johann Cruyff perhaps). Of course this prodigiously talented painter has been hugely popular and incredibly influential in the years since his tragic death, but he went almost unrecognised in his lifetime. Unbelievably, this genius of the art world only sold one painting in his lifetime – and all this despite the fact that he painted well over 900 works of art. The Van Gogh Museum is doing its best to make up for lost time, and is a wonderful celebration of his life and work. It is also completely wheelchair accessible throughout. This modern building has been well designed with accessibility in mind, with ramps, lifts and accessible toilets too.

Catch a show at the Concertgebouw

There is always plenty on at Amsterdam’s leading concert hall. Even if you don’t go to an event it is well worth going along to enjoy the building itself. It was built in the late 1800s and is well renowned globally for the quality of the shows it puts on. You will find it easy to get into and around too. Although there are only a couple of areas for wheelchairs in the two main halls, it is fully accessible and you can still get a good sense of this wonderful venue. Lose yourself in the Rijksmuseum

The great news is that this jewel in Europe’s artistic crown has been recently redesigned, making it very accessible to those of us with different mobility needs. All of the many wonderful galleries at the Rijksmuseum are fully accessible and you will also find lifts to all floors and accessible toilets. It is impossible to list the many treasures that you will find within its walls, but highlights include masterpieces by Dutch giants such as Vermeer and Rembrandt, as well as countless examples of sculpture and crafts.

Enjoy a leisurely canal cruise

What do you think of when you think of Amsterdam? Bicycles, flowers, trams… and canals. Amsterdam’s waterways are world famous and taking a cruise on one of the city’s many canals is a great way to see the sights. So much of life here revolves around the water and we really recommend you take a boat tour to get a taste of the way people live here. There are a number of boat companies that offer accessible tours, with ramped access and some boats even equipped with a lift. The Blue Boat Company in particular has had some great reviews, and you can find out more about enjoying a tour with them by contacting them via their website.

Getting to Amsterdam

Flying in to Amsterdam from the UK is very straightforward. There are regular flights from the London airports as well as from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Newcastle into the city’s main airport at Schiphol.

The team at Schiphol airport are incredibly helpful, but they do ask that you let them know beforehand if you’ll need assistance at the airport. You can get in touch with them here. You will find it easy to get from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport into the centre too. If you’re hiring a car then you can have help to get to your car: just ask the airport team. Alternatively there are accessible buses into the city centre and you can check the service you need here. Finally there is also a fast and regular train service, which you can find out more about here. If you are traveling in by train it is a good idea to make sure you have booked a hotel near the station to make things easier once you’re in town.

As we’ve said already, once you’re in Amsterdam you will find it a relatively easy city to get around. There are cobbles and some of the older tram stops aren’t so accessible, but generally you will find fewer obstacles than in most European cities. Travelling with scooters

Quingo Scooters Accessible Routes: Dunwich Coast

There are so many wonderful places to explore right here in the UK, and at Quingo Scooters we want to do everything we can to share them with you. So, in our latest series of the best accessible routes in the country that you can enjoy on your mobility scooter, we visit Dunwich in Suffolk.

The Dunwich Coast

If you love history, beautiful nature and even the odd ghost story, you’ll love Dunwich. It’s remote, far out on the Suffolk coast, and a fantastic place to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Today, it’s hard to believe but this quiet village was once a city as important as London, the capital of the kingdom of the Eastern Angles, the seat of Anglo-Saxon bishops and a busy port. Slowly, over the centuries the city has been consumed by the sea. The largest part of the destruction took place in one day, in 1286, when the city lost many of its buildings, including churches and monasteries. Which is where the ghost stories come in. The stories go that on a dark and windy night you can still hear the ghostly bells tolling under the waves.

Whether that’s true or not, Dunwich certainly has a special atmosphere. We recommend visiting any time between July and September, when Dunwich Heath is a riot of spectacular colour. And if you’re a nature lover, there are also hides between Dunwich and Minsmere Nature Reserve that are a perfect place to spot birds and other wildlife. Once you’ve enjoyed a day in the fresh air, we also highly recommend a meal at the village’s lovely Ship Inn.

Accessibility

There are three ways around the Heath at Dunwich, which all have flat paths. Take your pick from the 2.5-mile Gorse route, the 1.2-mile Heather route and the 1.1-mile Birch route. Again, go in spring or summer when the gorse and heather is out, you might even get to see red deer!

If you want to park at the Dunwich Beach and Heath car park, there are four Blue Badge parking bays behind the Coastguard Cottages. There is also ramped access and an accessible toilet at the Coastal Centre.

Down the road, Minsmere Nature Reserve also has eight Blue Badge spaces. While the paths and hides at the reserve vary in terms of accessibility, a number have been adapted for access. To find out more, check out their accessibility page here.

Of course, this is a remote spot, but it’s still surprisingly easy to get there. By road, it’s well signposted from the A12. There are buses from Darsham and Saxmundham (although you’ll need to call them to book, on 01728 833526).

The nearest railway station is Darsham, which is just a short taxi drive away.

  • If you’re a keen gardener, you’ll love the Royal Botanic Gardens. Founded in 1670, this beautiful site is now a world-renowned centre for science, education and horticulture. With 4 different gardens making up the experience, this the perfect place to learn all about plants and their relationships, evolution, conservation and biology. Each garden has a different use:

Edinburgh: Here you’ll find the world-famous Rock Garden, peat and woodland gardens. Whether you’re marvelling at the well-stocked glasshouses or exploring the colourful herbaceous borders, this garden is an idyllic break from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh. The specialist collections are not to be missed!

Benmore: Set in a milder oceanic climate, come face to face with plant life found in high rainfall areas. The conifers and rhododendrons are particularly incredible natural beauties!

Logan: Scotland’s most exotic garden! With an almost sub-tropical climate, these ideal growing conditions are home to southern hemisphere plants. As an added bonus, these warmer temperatures are a perfect break on cold days!

Dawyck: Hardy plants from the colder and drier areas of the world find their home here. You’ll be fascinated by how these tough plants overcome the adversity of their environment and have adapted to survive.

When you’re here, make sure to meet the edible gardening team! This is available on Mondays and Tuesdays between 1pm and 2.30pm. While you’re looking around the productive garden with members of the Edible Gardening Project volunteers, you’ll be able to pick up helpful tips to make your garden the best it can be. With advice on what jobs need doing in your garden and answers to your vegetable growing questions, your garden will be blooming in no time!

  • Art fans – we’ve got the perfect place for you! Set in the historic and beautiful official Scottish residence of the Queen, The Queen’s Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse is home to a rotating series of art. Make sure to check out their page before you visit, to see what exciting events are on now. Here are some of our recommendations for what to catch.

Shadows of War: This is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on Roger Fenton’s pioneering photographs of the Crimean War, taken in 1855. This moving insight into war captures the human and emotional impact of war. This thought-provoking exhibit will stay with you long after you’ve left.

For brunch, there’s no better place than Southpour. Serving up classics like avocado on toast and eggs benedict, this wide-ranging menu offers so many options. Make sure to save room for pudding!

Pizza lovers will enjoy La Favorita. Locals claim that this is home to the best pizza in Edinburgh – and for good reason! Its famous crisp thin log fired pizza are served in a large and spacious setting and are always tasty.

If its traditional Scottish food you’re after, we recommend Norn. Tucked away in Leith, this restaurant offers a creative dining experience with a difference! Using the best Scottish produce, you’ll be treated to fresh takes on the Scottish classics.

Getting around

For getting around Edinburgh, we recommend taking public transport. With such a busy city, finding parking spaces can be difficult. Throughout the area, you’ll find frequent trams and buses. As these have now been made accessible for mobility scooters, they’re the perfect way to navigate the city with ease.

Alternatively, why not discover more about the city while you travel. The Edinburgh bus tours offer this and so much more. There’s a reason they’re Scotland’s third most popular paid-for attraction! Once you’re on board, you’ll spend an hour being taken around all the monumental locations of Edinburgh’s history and culture. How to get there

As a major city, Edinburgh is accessible by all major forms of transport. If you are travelling by train, the nearest stop is in Edinburgh Waverley train station, located in the heart of the city. Edinburgh airport is also a short journey away from the centre.

If you’re travelling by car, there are around 90 Blue Badge spaces available in the centre of the city. These locations can be found on this map. Alternatively, there are 6 Blue Badge bays in the Edinburgh Castle NCP car park, which is conveniently located next to Edinburgh castle.

Overlooking the North-West coast is the city of Liverpool, best known for its culture and music scene. With plenty of fun attractions to visit we can see why! For football fans, it’s the home of two of the Premiership’s biggest football teams. But if you’re more into leisurely touring the city, you’ll find mouth-watering restaurants, a huge range of shops in the Liverpool One centre and many accessible cultural attractions. Be sure to check out these highlights:

  • The Beatles Story – Discover the story of how one of the world’s biggest boy bands was formed and created in the heart of Liverpool. With lifts throughout, it is perfectly accessible. Visitors must note that a maximum of five wheelchair users are allowed into the exhibit at one time, so guests are advised to book in advance to avoid disappointment. The exhibit is equipped with accessible toilets and also allows for the use of assistance dogs.
  • The World Museum – This exhibit is set over five floors has a range of thrilling exhibits explaining world history – definitely a worthwhile attraction to visit for history fanatics! The museum is fully accessible and allows for assistance dogs; the cafes, shops and toilets are all accessible as well. Some exhibits have audio equipment available, and the planetarium has designated accessible spaces.
  • Liverpool Cathedral – This magnificent building is one of Liverpool’s most popular attractions. The 5th largest cathedral in the world, its architecture is impressive and is certainly an attraction you won’t want to miss! The cathedral has two accessible points and is mostly mobility scooter accessible throughout.
  • Eating in Liverpool – not only does Liverpool boast incredible attractions, it has a number of impressive restaurants hosting a huge range of cultures and cuisines. There are numerous restaurants/cafes/bistros that are fully accessible.

Getting about in Liverpool

Travelling around Liverpool is incredibly easy as a mobility scooter user, as it has many accessible transport links in and around the city. There are specially designed accessible buses, which have wide doors, flat floors and low entrances.
