Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: National Museum of Scotland

Quingo Scooters are going exploring this week, as part of our Accessible Attractions series, discovering the natural world, art and science and technology under one roof – in Scotland.

The National Museum of Scotland is part of four museum sites within Scotland; alongside the National War Museum, National Museum of Flight and the National Museum of Rural Life.

The museum

The National Museum of Scotland has a range of galleries showcasing fascinating facts and artefacts from across the globe. The Natural World galleries tell the story of the planet, whilst the World Culture galleries link people and possessions. Within the Scottish galleries, visitors can follow the story of Scotland through from prehistory to the present day; including over 800 objects and the stories of Scots who took their ideas and innovations across the world.

Alongside the galleries, the museum has a range of exhibitions on show, including:

  • The Galloway Hoard (until 1 October 2017) – the Galloway Hoard is an extraordinary find of Viking-age gold, silver and jewelled treasures. It is the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland, bringing together over 100 gold, silver and other items from across Ireland, the Anglo-Saxon world, the Holy Roman Empire and Byzantium.
  • BUILD IT! A museum made from LEGO (until 31 December 2017) – a magnificent three-metre LEGO model of the National Museum of Scotland is now on display. Renowned brick artist Warren Elsmore and his team took over 350 hours and almost 90,000 bricks to build the model.
  • Age of Oil (until 5 November 2017) – the multimedia exhibition brings a unique perspective to the relationship between art, environment and industry. Linking closely to themes introduced in the Energise gallery, the exhibition considers the future of energy in Scotland.
  • Scotland’s Early Silver (25 February 2018) – the exhibition explores the impact of silver during the first millennium AD, as the most precious metal in Scotland for a thousand years. including jewellery, vessels, coins and other finds, the exhibition examines silver as the times change.

Ticket prices and opening times

Admission to the museum is free, visitors have the option to donate to the museum, however, this is voluntary. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm, the museum is closed on Christmas Day (25 December) and is open from 12pm to 5pm on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Getting there

For visitors travelling to the museum by bus, buses go via the city centre and stop outside the museum on Chambers Street, or nearby on George IV Bridge and South Bridge.

By train, the nearest station is Edinburgh Waverley, the museum is 10-15 minutes away from the train station.

For visitors travelling by car, follow signs towards Edinburgh city centre. Off-street parking is available nearby the museum at NCP sites.

Accessibility

There is level access to the museum via the main doors to the Entrance Hall on Chambers Street and the Tower entrance at the corner of Chambers Street and George IV Bridge. There are four designated public parking spaces available for visitors with mobility aids, there are no charges for these spaces, however, they cannot be booked in advance. There is level access throughout the museum with lifts available to all floors. The accessible toilets are available on most floors, these toilets can be located using a map of the museum as well as following signs.

Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: Discovery Museum, Newcastle

This week, as part of our Accessible Attractions series, Quingo Scooters are in the heart of Newcastle. If discovering ancient artefacts, as well as learning about maritime history, world-changing science and technology or fashion, interests you this attraction is perfect!

The Discovery Museum in Newcastle allows visitors to discover all about life in Newcastle and Tyneside, using interactive displays, it makes it the perfect place to learn and have fun.

The museum

The museum offers many great permanent displays as well as temporary exhibitions, including:

  • Turbinia (Permanent) – once dubbed the fastest ship in the world! Charles Algernon Parsons built the world’s first steam turbine powered ship, Turbinia, changing the face of maritime history. In 1897 the ship measured 32 metres long and was the fastest in the world at that time.
  • Enigma & the North East (until 1 April 2018) – providing the opportunity to witness a rare Enigma machine, used to code secret messages during WW2. The exhibit tells the stories of Tyneside-built ships HMS Bulldog and HMS Petard, involved in salvaging material from German U-boats which were vital for the teams to break the German Navy Enigma.
  • Newcastle Story (Permanent) – walk through the history of Newcastle from the Roman period up to the early millennium, stopping by the homes, communities and businesses of the past.
  • All the Fun of the Fair: 135 Years of The Hoppings (until 1 October 2017) – All the Fun of the Fair showcases the history of Newcastle’s much-loved Hoppings fair, first held on the Town Moor in 1882. Included are a collection of 50 vintage coin-operated amusement machines – perfect for testing your pinball skills!

Opening times and entry prices

The museum is open every day from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and from 11am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry to the museum is free, however, donations are welcomed. For more information, visit the ‘Visit Us’ webpage here.

Getting there

The museum is located on the edge of Newcastle city centre, it is 5 minutes away from Newcastle Central station as well as the Tyne & Wear Metro service.

Visitors travelling by car will find parking directly opposite the museum, however, this is very limited in busy periods. It is advised to park at the Grainger Town multi-storey car park located on Waterloo Street.

Accessibility

The approach to the entrance of the museum is tarmacked, meaning there is easy access for scooter users. There is level access throughout the whole of the museum, as well as three lifts providing access to all floors. Accessibility information can be found on the ‘Access’ webpage here.

Quingo Accessible Getaways: Bath

Quingo Scooters likes to inspire users to become tourists, by travelling to some of the world’s top destinations on their mobility scooters. In our series of articles, we’re continuing to add to our list of accessible getaways both at home and abroad, which you can visit easily as a mobility scooter user.

Today we’re taking you to Bath. Located in Somerset, this is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, known especially for its fascinating historical attractions and stunning architecture.

Bath tourism

Originally established in Roman times, Bath is one of the UK’s oldest human settlements which still stands today. Due to its incredible history, the entire city of Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s the only British city to hold this honour. It features various accessible attractions, including:

  • Roman Baths: Built on top of natural hot springs, the Roman Baths were constructed in 70AD. This complex, which is one of the best preserved Roman ruins on earth, includes the remains of heated rooms, baths, statues and temples, making it a must for history enthusiasts. This site features accessible toilets, a ramp up to its entrance, accessible public areas and a lift.
  • Fashion Museum: This attraction houses eye-catching fashions dating back to 1600, with over 160 dressed figures for you to see. Here you’ll find everything from Georgian-era gowns to cutting-edge, modern styles, allowing you to explore the evolution of fashion. It includes an accessible entrance and accessible public areas and toilets, with lifts throughout the building.
  • Victoria Art Gallery: This is Bath’s second-most visited museum, attracting around 117,000 guests per year. It houses works produced by some of the greatest British artists. This includes a permanent collection, which is free to visit, featuring works from Turner and Gainsborough. Here you’ll find a ramp up to the main entrance, as well as a lift, enabling full accessibility.
  • No 1. Royal Crescent: Step back in time, by checking out this authentic Georgian townhouse. It is a fine example of Palladian architecture, having been built between 1767 and 1774. The house showcases various displays and exhibits which house authentic furniture, paintings, textiles and carpets from this era. It has level access to public areas and a lift.

Accessibility

On the plan your visit page, you’ll also find a handy access for all section, which features information on how you can take advantage of Bath as a mobility scooter user. It includes a list of accessible accommodation, such as the popular Holiday Inn Express. Located just a mile from Bath city centre and its railway station, the hotel has disabled parking, level access to all areas and accessible rooms. It also has accessible living areas and bathrooms, which include shower chairs, WCs with handrails and even furniture re-arrangement upon request.

The access for all page also covers the Visitor Information Centre, where you can find details on accessible accommodation and attractions. Located next to Bath Abbey, the Centre is less than a mile from the train station and is accessible by bus and taxi. The nearest carpark is less than five minutes away, on Manvers Street. Quingo Accessible Attractions: The National Media Museum

Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to get out and about to visit interesting or unusual places on their mobility scooters, especially places that you didn’t think were accessible enough. Over our series of blog posts we’ve been sharing with you some extremely accessible attractions to explore on your mobility scooter.

In Bradford, West Yorkshire, you’ll find the National Media Museum. Part of the Science Museum Group, here you’ll see exhibitions focusing on photography, television, animation, videogaming, the internet and the scientific principles behind light and colour. Spread out over seven floors, there are 3.5 million pieces to take a look at. On top of all that, there’s also a Picturehouse cinema, including an IMAX screen.  The popular Bradford International Film Festival was also hosted here until 2014.

What’s on?

This is a great day out for all ages, as there’s always loads of different activities to participate in. There’s interactive galleries, cultural and educational activities and events. Here’s a few things that are going on at the moment at the National Media Museum:

  • Games Lounge – Definitely one for any Playstation addicts in the group, here you can play your way through classic games in their original or console formats. You can also learn about the history of videogaming, and discover the story behind the global phenomenon. Some of the highlights include original arcade machines such as Space Invaders and Street Fighter II. They cost the same as when they were first in use – 10-50 pence!
  • In Your Face – Running until 30th October, In Your Face is an experience for the whole group. The idea is to investigate the most photographed, examined and expressive part of the human body through a pick and mix adventure. This consists of interactive demonstrations, displays and activities. There’s loads of fun challenges and experiments to throw yourself into and explore unusual ideas!

Accessibility

Overall there is great accessibility at the National Media Museum. The entrance to the front of the building is level and has automatic doors. For those entering from the car park entrance, this rear door has automatic push buttons.

Throughout the museum there are a number of accessible toilets – on the ground floor, level 3, level 5 and the picture Ville bar with plenty of room to manoeuvre.

In the car park there are parking spaces for blue badge holders. The museum shop is fully accessible, and the café is as well – a great place to grab a bite to eat! The café has two heights of tables to accommodate mobility scooter users and all seating is movable.
