Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: The World Museum, Liverpool

Exploring from the sea to the stars, from when dinosaurs roamed the earth to human civilisations spanning many millennia, the World Museum in Liverpool offers an up-close look at the wonders of the natural world. With so much to see, including the Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China to an interactive display of the night sky, there’s something for all ages and interests. It’s no wonder it was the winner of Family Go Live’s best day out for under 12’s award in 2014.

This week, Quingo Scooters is heading to the World Museum to learn more about the history of our wonderful world. Covering all corners of the globe and its diverse cultures, let’s look at what’s on offer…

What’s on

  • Ancient Egypt: Taking a 5000-year journey around this ancient civilization, history lovers will be fascinated by the many wondrous artefacts and displays. With one of the largest Egyptian collections in the UK, you’ll see such treasures from a sculpture of the head of Zeus Ammon to a relief carving in limestone of Thutmose and even a model of an Egyptian kitchen. With so much to discover over 1,000 square feet, there are more than 2,700 items in this internationally significant collection.

Must see: Egyptian mummies loom large in popular imagination and culture, so why not see one for yourself? The World Museum is home to a mummy of a young boy. With decorative wrapping and a painted panel portrait, you can learn all about this ancient preservation method.

  • World Cultures Gallery: The history of the world is on display in this incredible exhibition! Drawing on huge ethnographic collections, you’ll encounter artefacts from the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania, the exchange of ideas between various cultures is examined. Using both historical and contemporary perspectives, the stories and backgrounds behind the objects are explored in fascinating detail.
  • Planetarium: Travelling through space and time, this exciting adventure brings the Universe closer. Throughout the week there are different informative talks and presentations. From exploring lunar phases to the journey of cosmic discovery and even seeing the constellations of the night sky, the Planetarium has something of interest for all ages. Must see: A new show to the area, Sunstruck, is an astounding expedition through time. Travelling back to the birth of the sun, it uncovers how it came to support life and how its energy will one day fade away. Using several NASA heliophysics missions, this educational voyage is a valuable experience for all.

  • Natural World: The wonders of the natural world come to life in the museum’s Natural World section. Get a close-up view of live colonies of insects and discover a range of animal specimens. From the plains of Africa to the rainforests of South America, this gallery must be seen by all animal enthusiasts.
  • Aquarium: Diving into the watery depths, you’ll meet a vast range of marine life. With tropical, mangrove and native fish all on display, the aquarium uses the latest technology to bring you fish from Australia to Anglesey. Whether you’re fascinated by Falseclown fish and beautiful rainbow-coloured fish or are more interested in Thornback Rays and coldwater fish, these specially designed tanks mimic the animal’s native habitats. This is the perfect place to immerse yourself in life under the sea!

Must see: Get up close and personal with these incredible creatures in the Living Laboratory. This dedicated learning and activity space has special low-level tanks and expert staff on hand ready to answer any questions.

  • Dinosaurs Gallery: Have you ever wanted to come face to face with a dinosaur or wondered what the world looked like in the Jurassic Period? The Dinosaur Gallery brings to life this period of history in an exciting and immersive experience. Entering through a time tunnel, you’ll see how much life has changed through geological time. From investigating the sandstones slabs that contain the footprints of extinct animals to witnessing the Allosaurus about to attack the Camptosaurus, dinosaur fans will be captivated.

Must see: No trip to the Dinosaur Gallery is complete without meeting the Megalosaurus! This full-sized cast of a Megalosaurus skeleton offers an up-close perspective on the size and might of these incredible creatures.

  • Terracotta Warriors: Coming in February 2018, this exhibition is bringing one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries to Liverpool. Spanning almost 1000 years of Chinese history, you’ll see how the underground army of life-sized terracotta warriors secretly guarded the tomb of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, and how they came to be. Covering the conflict of the Warring States period to the achievements and legacy of the Qin and Han dynasties, this is an unforgettable glimpse into Chinese history and culture. With many objects never before seen in the UK, the Terracotta Warriors display is a must see for everyone!
  • Clore Natural History Centre: History doesn’t get more hands-on than this! From touching a hippopotamus skull to holding a mammoth tooth to even examining a tropical butterfly, you’ll witness the history of the natural world in a personal way. With interactive displays and activities, you’ll uncover the history and connect with the natural world!
  • Weston Discovery Centre: If human history is your interest, this section is perfect for you. Using the museum’s archaeology and ethnology collections, you’ll discover the stories behind who made and used these objects. From handling 5000-year-old artefacts to learning about ancient weaving skills, you’ll be fascinated by tales of humanity and society throughout history.
  • Treasure House Theatre: The World Museum’s fascinating collections are explored in captivating and personal forms in this theatre. Bringing history to life, there are always new and exciting events to discover. One day you may find yourself taking part in a hands-on activity, while other days you can watch a live video conference link. Eating and drinking at the World Museum

A must for any visit, the café at the World Museum is the perfect place to eat, drink and relax in an amazing setting. Once the grand exam hall of the Technical School of Liverpool, opened in 1901, this space still features its impressive and intricate plasterwork. Through recent renovations, the original artwork is still an amazing sight to see here.

This historic setting is also home to a delicious menu. With a wide selection of classic hot meals, soups, sandwiches, salads and hot and cold drinks, this new café is serving up all your favourites. It’s comfortable and the perfect place to take a break from the excitement of the museum. Check out the menu and opening times here.

Opening times and prices

The World Museum Liverpool is open daily from 10am to 5pm, except for 24-26 and 31 December, when it is closed all day. Plus, it’s free entry for everyone.

Getting there

The World Museum is in Liverpool city centre, close to the entrance to Lime Street train station and the Queensway tunnel. If you are travelling by car, the postcode is L3 8EN and there are Blue Badge spaces available outside the attraction on William Brown Street. The nearest train station is Liverpool Lime Street and the area is serviced by regular buses. Further information on planning your journey can be found here.

Accessibility

Acknowledged in the Vitalise Accessible UK Tourism Report 2014, the World Museum was rated the third most accessible tourist destination in the UK. With automatic doors at the entrance, the main entryway is level. There are lifts to all floors and accessible toilets are on all floors. Birmingham is a proud pioneer in the worlds of manufacturing, communications, transport and medicines. As a celebration of this rich history, Thinktank science museum is home to all the city’s wondrous achievements in these fields. Whether you’re interested in the development of technology or are fascinated by the history of the region, this award-winning science museum is both an enlightening and entertaining day out!

This week, Quingo Scooters are heading to Thinktank Birmingham. With a range of exhibitions and galleries, we’re learning more about how science shaped the city and contributed to modern life. You’ll see everything from a Spitfire and the world’s oldest working steam engine to a virtual experience of a pioneering surgery. You’ll even come face to face with the UK’s largest Ichthyosaurus (if you’re wondering what that is, so did we, more below)!

What’s on

  • Industrial Heritage: Discovering the past has never been so interesting! Showcasing Birmingham’s industrial heritage, here you’ll see what kept the revolution moving. Transport throughout the ages is on display, including trains, cars, planes, trams and bikes. As you explore the remarkable story of Birmingham’s transport revolution, you’ll learn about the complex web of canals, roads and railways that connect this major city to the rest of the UK. This is one of the most comprehensive steam collections in the entire world!
  • Must see: Those with in an interest in the Industrial Revolution must see the Smethwick Engine. Dating back to 1779, this is the oldest working steam engine in the world! It can pump one tonne of water every stroke, an immense 1,500 buckets of water every minute.
    • Spitfire Gallery: Fans of history and World War II will love this exhibition! Telling the story of the iconic aircraft, you’ll learn all about its innovative design and how it was created. Those interested in the science behind the invention will undoubtedly love the exhibits on the cutting-edge technology or how aircraft fly.

    Must see: Spitfires have a lasting legacy on the city. Did you know that over 10,000 were manufactured in Castle Bromwich between 1940 and 1945? You’ll discover one of these amazing war aircraft on display in this gallery.

    • Planetarium: Thinktank is home to the UK’s first purpose-built digital planetarium. Whether you’re taking a visit around the night sky or touring the solar system, you’ll learn all about astronomy on your adventures! In addition to space, the planetarium is also a wonderful place to learn more about life on earth. Here you can shrink to the size of an atom, dive under the ocean and even travel around the human body.

    Must see: Throughout the year, the Planetarium hosts dedicated events and talks, with everything from solar observing to theatre productions. Information on upcoming events is available here.

    • Marine Worlds Gallery: With creatures from the past and present on display, this is a must for anyone interested in marine animals. Displaying animals that have adapted to life under the sea, there are walruses, penguins and even prehistoric marine crocodiles to be found.

    Must see: No trip to Thinktank is complete without seeing the UK’s biggest Ichthyosaurus. Although they look a lot like dolphins, this creature was actually a reptile! At almost 200 million years old, this giant sea monster is the focus of a 2-year conservation and research project.

    • We Made It: with more than 20 interactive exhibits, learn all about Birmingham’s world-renowned manufacturing and natural science collections. There are 4 areas for you to explore, and you’ll always find something of interest. From nuts and bolts to treasure, tins and things to gadgets, there’s plenty going on. Take a journey from raw materials to the finished product or learn why we use certain types of packaging. With all things made or designed in Birmingham, you’ll learn why the city became known as ‘the workshop of the world’.
    • Investigate the Present: Science is all around us. In this section, you’ll discover the amazing science and technology underlying everyday life. This area is comprised of: Kids’ City Gallery, Things About Me Gallery, Wild Life Gallery, Medicine Matters Gallery and The Street Gallery. From taking an unusual journey through the human body to discovering animals and fossils, you’ll explore science in a modern setting. You can even become an animator in the Animate It! Studio and star in your own Shaun the Sheep adventure using motion capture technology.

    Must see: Did you know that Birmingham is home to the global market leaders for hip resurfacing? This city pioneered the technique for hip resurfacing that has seen over 125,000 implantations worldwide. At Thinktank, delve into how this operation was developed and how it is carried out. You can even take part in a virtual hip resurfacing operation while you’re here!

    Must see: Check out the interactive exhibits, RoboThespian and Create an Alien.

  • Find the Future: Have you ever wondered what’s next for science and technology? In the Find the Future gallery, you’ll see predictions for the future and be able to have your say. This gallery showcases how science has had an enormous impact on how we live and how it could continue to affect us. From exploring the outer reaches of space to wondering at the innovative inventions, there’s lots to discover here.

Eating and drinking at Thinktank

The Thinktank café, on Level 0 near Locomotive, is a wonderful place to make a pit stop for a quick refreshment break or enjoy a hot or cold meal. The café has a range of healthy meals available and a children’s menu. There’s also a coffee cart during the week (term time only) available from the picnic area and a Science Garden Kiosk.

Opening times and prices

Thinktank is open from 10am to 5pm, 7 days a week. The last admission is at 4pm. With the Planetarium closed for maintenance once a month, its best to check here before you visit. Tickets vary in price, with full information available here.

Getting there

Thinktank is located in Digbeth, in the Eastside region of Birmingham city centre. If you are travelling by car, the postcode is B4 7AP. There is a Birmingham City Council multi-storey car park next to the attraction, which has 20 Blue Badge holders’ spaces. The entrance is on Jennens Road. If you are travelling by bus, the nearest station is Moor Street, which is around 10 minutes from the attraction. There are also frequent buses servicing the area. Accessibility

Situated inside Birmingham’s Millennium Point building, Thinktank is fully accessible for all visitors. With central lifts to all floors and even surfaces throughout, all the presenting spaces throughout the attraction are accessible. Accessible toilets and seating are on all Thinktank’s 4 floors. Providing a visual history of Northern Ireland and all corners of the world, Ulster Museum is a fascinating place to visit. One minute you’ll come face to face with dinosaurs and the next you’ll be exploring a personal local history tour of Northern Ireland. To learn more, Quingo Scooters is heading to Ulster Museum in Belfast as part of this week’s Accessible Attractions series.

What’s on

  • Elements (runs until 24 February 2020): The Elements is an exploration of science and the periodic table. Covering everything from viruses to galaxies, this unique exhibition shows what elements are, what they look like and how they are made. Broken into different themes, such as Life and Death, Colour and Light, Progress and Technology, Elements tells stories through science. This exhibition is unique and the only one of its kind in Europe.
  • Peter the Polar Bear: One of Ulster Museum’s most popular exhibitions, Peter the Polar Bear was a beloved bear at Belfast Zoo. After his death in August 1972, Peter was carefully prepared and mounted for his exhibition at Ulster Museum. At over 360kg, he is the largest mounted animal ever in Northern Ireland.
  • Conflicting Images (runs until 25 February 2018): This exhibition brings together collections of photography from the recent past to tell the story of the Northern Irish Troubles. Visually showing the story of this era of Northern Irish life, this personalized record is an interesting look at the history of Ulster.
  • Nobel Peace Prize Medal: Looking to the struggles of the late 20th century in Northern Ireland, this exhibition looks at the work of Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan. Following the death of a member of the IRA, a huge public reaction led to the development of The Community for Peace People by the two women. Williams and Corrigan’s Nobel Peace Prize for their promotion of peace and reconciliation can be found here. This piece of recent history is an interesting look.
  • Craft classes: There are always plenty of craft classes to choose from – visit the website to find out what’s coming up.
  • Other highlights: There’s so much to see and do here and other highlights include open afternoons for over 50s, Live Well workshops, art displays from around the world and much more.

Opening times and prices

Ulster Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm. The attraction is closed in Mondays, with the exceptions of Northern Ireland Bank holidays. The attraction is free of charge for all guests to enjoy.

Getting there

Located in the Botanic Gardens in the Queen’s University area of South Belfast, the Ulster Museum is accessible via all major forms of transport. If you are travelling by car, there are five dedicated spaces for Blue Badge holders. By rail, the Botanic Station is 10 minutes away from the museum. Local buses also serve the area. Accessibility

Ulster Museum is fully accessible for all guests and mobility scooters are allowed in the museum. The main entrance is flat, with automatic doors and a push pad function to open. There is ramp access to all levels, with flat surfaces throughout. Exhibitions are displayed at an accessible height Several lifts are available throughout the museum. Fully accessible toilets can be found on the ground floor and levels 2 and 4. There are five Blue Badge spaces available on the Stranmillis Road side of the attraction. Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: The British Museum

Quingo Scooters are heading back to the capital this week for another instalment of our Accessible Attractions series. We’re discovering world cultures as well as learning about artefacts from across the globe.

The museum

This week we’re visiting The British Museum in London, founded in 1753, the museum is home to a range of objects from across the world. It showcases a vast collection of artefacts, which tell the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present day. With over 70 galleries there’s something for everyone:

  • Virtual pilgrimage: reimagining India’s Great Shrine of Amaravati (until 8 October) – The Great Shrine of Amaravati was one of the oldest, largest and most important Buddhist monuments in ancient India. Discover the Shrine’s significance and learn about the pilgrims who funded its construction.
  • Desire, love, identity: exploring LGBTQ histories (until 15 October) – the display offers glimpses into LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) histories, experiences and lives from across the globe as the exhibit covers ancient civilisations up until the present day.
  • Living histories: recent acquisitions of works on paper by contemporary Arab artists (until 22 October) – the display highlights recent additions of posters, prints, drawings, photographs and artists’ books to the museum. Many of the artists come from Syria, illustrating the modern history of country in artistic form.
  • The business of prints (21 September 2017 until 28 January 2018) – the exhibitions shows fine examples from Britain’s print collection to look at how prints were created, developed, bought and sold in the period 1400-1850.

Each of the above exhibitions is free of charge to view.

Opening times and entry prices

The museum is open daily from 10am – 5.30pm, the museum is closed on 24, 25, 26 December and 1 January. The museum has free entry for all visitors.

Getting there

The museum is located in central London, for visitors travelling by Tube, the nearest underground stations are Tottenham Court Road (500m), Holborn (500m), Russell Square (800m) and Goodge Street (800m). For more information, visit the Transport for London tube maps website here.

By Bus, there are a number of services that run near to the museum stopping on New Oxford Street, northbound on Tottenham Court Road, southbound on Gower Street and Southampton Row. For more information, visit the Transport for London bus routes website here.

By car, visitors should follow directions for Great Russel Street in Central London. The museum is within the Congestion Charge zone; therefore, visitors will be required to pay this charge. There is little on-street parking available, the nearest carpark to the museum is located at Bloomsbury Square. There is a limited amount of disabled parking in the Museum’s forecourt. Accessibility

The majority of the museum has level access, the Great Russell Street entrance has a lift on either side of the steps, alternatively there is level access at the Montague Place entrance. The majority of the galleries and all special exhibitions are fully accessible for scooter users, there are lifts available to allow access to each of the galleries. There are accessible toilets in the Great Court, the Ford Centre for Young Visitors, the Clore Education Centre and to the north of Room 66.

Here at Quingo Scooters we like to provide you with a range of great UK attractions to visit as part of our Accessible Attractions series – this week we’ve chosen a quirky attraction to teach you all about one of the UK’s most popular spirits. We’re staying in Scotland for another week, to teach you everything you need to know about whisky!

We’re visiting The Scotch Whisky Experience, on a barrel ride through a replica distillery to find out more about the production of whisky. Along the way, you’ll hear the stories behind the craft of whisky making with expert tour guides and whisky advisors.

The whisky experience

Discover aromas and flavours that appeal to your palate, leading you to find your perfect Single Malt Whisky. The Whisky collection includes 3,384 bottles of Scotch Whisky, and is held within a marble and glass vault. Visitors get the chance to taste a Scotch Whisky.

Claive Vidiz, a whisky enthusiast in Sao Paulo, started to seek and buy Scotch Whisky of each varying type, cost and rarity. Over 35 years he collected almost 3,500 bottles, before selling the collection to Scotch Whisky distiller Diageo. Diageo brought the collection to Scotland where it became the Scotch Whisky Experience.

The Experience offers five tours, ranging from those for first-timers to whisky pros. Four of the five tours are for people aged 18 and over.

  • The Gold Tour – includes a tasting tray of four single malt Scotch whiskies, membership to the Scotch Whisky Appreciation Society and discounts at the bar, restaurant and shop within the membership year; as well as including elements from the Silver Tour. The Gold Tour lasts between 70 and 90 minutes.
  • Morning Masterclass – includes a private viewing of the world’s largest collection of Scotch Whisky, sensory perception test, nosing of new-make spirit and boxed crystal whisky tasting glass, plus much more! The Morning Masterclass lasts 90 minutes.
  • The Platinum Tour – includes a whisky barrel ride through the production of Scotch whisky, guided nosing and tasting of four contrasting single malt whiskies and an extended viewing of the collection of Scotch Whisky. The Platinum Tour lasts 90 minutes.
  • The Taste of Scotland – includes features from the Platinum tour as well as: a three course Scottish food experience menu, dram of Scotch whisky with dessert and a ‘trio’ starter and ‘trio’ main course followed by dessert. This tour lasts approximately 3 hours.
  • The Silver Tour – includes a whisky barrel ride through the production of Scotch Whisky, a dram of Scotch Whisky (Irn Bru for under 18s) and a viewing of the Scotch whisky collection. The tour is available to people aged under 18 and runs for 50 minutes.

Entry prices and opening times

The Experience is open 7 days a week, 364 days a year. From January to March the experience is open from 10am – 5pm, April to July 10am – 6pm, August (Monday to Friday) 10am – 5pm, August (Saturday and Sunday) 10am – 5:40pm, and September to December 10am – 5pm.

Each tour provided includes a specific price:

  • The Gold Tour – adults £26 and concessions £23.75
  • Morning Masterclass – adults £40
  • The Platinum Tour – adults £36.50
  • The Taste of Scotland – adults £70
  • The Silver Tour – adults £15, concessions £13, children £7.50 and families £37

Getting there

The Scotch Whisky Experience is in the Old Town of Edinburgh, beside Edinburgh Castle. The Experience is located just a short distance from the main transport links, central hotels and attractions.

For visitors travelling by train, the nearest railway station is Edinburgh Waverley, from here public transport and/or taxis can be used to get to the Experience.

When travelling by bus, there are no buses that go directly to the Scotch Whisky Experience however there are many stops in the surrounding area. For information regarding bus routes and times, visit the Lothian Buses website.

By car, follow directions for ‘city centre’ and ‘attractions’, the Experience does not have onsite parking, however there is a multi-storey car park on Castle Terrace a short distance from the Experience, which includes 6 blue badge bays. Alternative parking options are available throughout the city.
