At this time of year everyone’s off on their holidays, whether it’s at home or abroad! Quingo Scooters are always browsing for new places to visit, and we understand just how important is to find somewhere fully accessible where you can be completely comfortable.

Puerto Pollensa

Located in northern Majorca, Spain, Puerto Pollensa is situated about 6km east of the town of Pollenca and two kilometres southeast of Cala Sant Vicenç. The most northerly town in Majorca, Pollença is split into several main areas: Pine walk, Boquer, Central, Siller, Pinaret, Llenaire and Gotmar.

The town has also historically been a place of interest for the famous. In the early 20th century, Agatha Christie visited Pollensa and stayed at a hotel in the Pine Walk area. She then went on to describe the town in her book, ‘Problem at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories’.

Flora Apartments

The 4 star Aparthotel Flora is a great destination for all groups of holidaymakers – families, couples or singles.  The apartments offer fully equipped and newly renovated apartments and a very big pool area.

Located directly in Puerto Pollensa, you are only 200 metres away from the sandy golden beach. You have everything on your doorstep with Flora Apartments, whether you want to visit local attractions or simply have a relaxing day on the beach – there’s definitely something for everyone.

If you don’t fancy cooking in the fully equipped kitchen of your apartment, you can treat yourself to a meal out in the spacious restaurant located in the complex.

Accessibility

Flora Apartments have 3 specially adapted, fully accessible rooms. All of these come complete with an accessible terrace too, so you won’t miss out on any of the views! All 3 of the accessible rooms also have walk in showers, grab rails and commode shower chairs. Hoists are also available to guests, just let a member of staff know on arrival and they will be more than happy to make sure you’ve got everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Access to these rooms is at the back of reception, and has an accessible ramp. If you fancy heading down to the pool for a cooling dip, there is a pool hoist available should you require it. All rooms also have air conditioning and Wi-Fi – a few added luxuries to make your stay super relaxing!

At this time of year we’re often eager to book a getaway and have something to look forward to. Quingo Scooters understand that finding somewhere that’s perfect is extremely important, especially when it comes to accessibility. We’re constantly looking around for ideas and inspiration on new places to visit!

In our series of blog posts on accessible holidays, we’ve been looking at the best spots for your ideal summer getaway. Today we’re staying a little closer to home as we explore the town of Cupar, in the Scottish county of Fife. Famous for its colourful fishing villages, glorious beaches and coastline, Fife is also the home of Golf. Situated between Dundee and Glenrothes on the east coast of Scotland, Cupar is a great relaxation spot with lots of countryside and picturesque views.

Rings Farm

Rings Farm is a small and friendly working farm, complete with crops and a flock of sheep. If you visit in spring, you may even be lucky enough to feed the pet lambs! There’s loads to do in this relaxing part of the countryside, for smaller members of the group and adults. Here you’ll be able to have a completely relaxing holiday, or use Rings Farm as a base for exploring other areas. Make sure you meet all the members of the farm too, including Collie Misty and Spaniel Rose.

The Rings

The Rings are fully accessible holiday accommodation, designed with flexibility and the needs of mobility impaired guests at its heart. A new and innovative development, The Rings only opened in spring this year, so you can be one of the first to try out the brand new apartments!

It is one complex offering self-catering, en-suite bedrooms – eight in total – and three of those have ceiling tracking hoists. If you have a larger group, The Rings can also be taken as one large property that sleeps up to 16. If not, and you have a smaller group, there are two main lounge kitchen dining areas which are divided by a moveable and soundproofed wall.

There are also two additional studio apartments to give great flexibility and different group booking options – so if you’re a party of 2 or 16, this will be perfect whatever the size of your group!

As well as the apartments, there are also two residential holiday caravans which are also fully accessible. More information on the caravans, and also the newly introduced camping, can be found on The Rings website.

Facilities

Being purpose built accommodation, The Rings are fully accessible. Each living room has its own French Windows to a ground level deck that runs around the entire property, giving you the chance to enjoy your breakfast in a morning with some unforgettable countryside views.

The moveable walls mean that you can create the perfect space that’s just right for you, and some of the studio apartments have connecting doors for carers if required. The kitchen is also fully equipped should you wish to cook yourself a nice meal.

A car is recommended when you stay at Ring Farm. Cupar is 20 minutes’ drive away, giving you the luxury of peace and quiet but also local amenities when you need them. The price of your stay varies depending on what kind of accommodation you are wanting and the length of your stay. Can I Take My Mobility Scooter on a Plane?

The summer season is upon us and we’ve just passed the longest day of the year. It’s around the time you’ll be wanting to plan that all important summer holiday, and for some of you it will be abroad. Quingo Scooters know that one of the most frequently asked questions is whether or not you can take your mobility scooter on a plane.

The truth is, travelling with your mobility scooter may not be as daunting or strenuous as you may think. Here, we’ve researched the details to make your trip as enjoyable and care free as can be.

Can I Take My Mobility Scooter on a Plane?

Most airlines will be more than happy to take your mobility scooter on board. However, it’s important to check with the airline you’re flying with before you book to be clear on their individual guidelines and provisions for mobility scooters. It is strongly recommended that you tell your airline you’ll be travelling with a mobility scooter at least 48 hours before departure.

Will it cost me extra?

The official government guidelines state that if you’re travelling to a European airport and you have a disability, then you can travel with up to two items of mobility equipment free of charge. These won’t be counted as part of your baggage allowance and you won’t be able to take your scooter into the passenger carriage of the plane, but it will be stored in the hold until arrival.

What will I need to do?

There are a few things you will need to do to prepare your mobility scooter for flight when you get to the airport:

  • Make sure your mobility scooter is fully charged
  • When you arrive at the airport, make sure you’ve removed all items from the basket or lockable boxes
  • Make sure you leave your scooter with the freewheel leaver in the braked or normal driving position
  • Ensure your scooter is kept in once piece if it is a scooter than can be disassembled
  • Write a label saying ‘remove key for flight’ and attach to the key and then to the handlebars
  • Some airlines will disconnect the batteries of your scooter during a flight. If your scooter is not working when you get to your destination check the battery cables are attached.

Other things to remember

There’s a few other things to remember before you leave for your trip:

  • Take a spare key with you – it’s always better to be prepared!
  • Take your battery charger and a suitable plug for the country you’re flying to
  • Check the local laws for driving mobility scooters in the country you’re visiting – these can vary from country to country so it’s important to familiarise yourself with any differences
  • Make sure the airline staff understand how to fold down the scooter for transport to ensure everything runs smoothly

Quingo Accessible Attractions: Dolaucothi Gold Mines, Wales

Here at Quingo Scooters we’ve been sharing places with you that would be perfect for a day out, especially places you’d never think to visit or you didn’t know existed! It’s great finding brand new accessible places to visit on your mobility scooter.

This week we’re heading to Wales, specifically to the valley of the River Cothi, near Pumsaint, for something a little bit different but incredibly fun.

The Dolaucothi Gold Mines, also known as the Ogofau Gold Mine, are underground mines dating back to Roman times. Now a National Trust property, the mines are the only known Roman gold mines in Britain. Winner of the Best Quirky Visit, there’s a great day out to be had at the Dolaucothi Gold Mines and plenty to do.

Underground Tours

The guided tours at the Dolaucothi Gold Mines are designed to take you back in time, to experience the conditions of the Roman, Victorian and 1930’s underground workings. You can see and hear the 1930’s mine machinery, and even have a go at gold panning yourself to see just how frustrating it could be! There are three different types of tour – you can do them all or pick and choose!

Long adit tour – The shortest underground tour, and 100% accessible for mobility scooters and wheelchairs.  This lasts approximately half an hour.

Roman tour – if there are other members of your group that aren’t looking for an accessible tour, the Roman and Victorian tour also run daily. Explore the mine and see the marks left by Roman tools. This lasts approximately an hour.

Victorian tour – Get your hard hat on and grab your lamp to delve into the landscape. This lasts approximately an hour.

Tours run throughout the day, but at different times and at different times of the year. All the information you need can be found on the Dolaucothi Gold Mines website.

Accessibility

Back in 2002, the Gold Mines went through extensive renovations in an effort to make the attraction more accessible for mobility scooters, wheelchairs and prams. This is when the third mine was built, Long Adit, which is the fully accessible mine. The floor level was lowered to create a brand new entrance to the Gold Mines, meaning there are no steps to climb and everyone can now experience the mines.

The surface of the site is course gravel, however a hard surfaced path has been laid around the perimeter to the kitting shed (where the helmets and lamps are provided) and the tunnel entrance. There are accessible toilets in the Gold Mines, and there is also a fully accessible café and shop.

Uber Offer uberASSIST – Improving Accessibility

Here at Quingo Scooters we’re passionate about finding new tools and discovering how they can make travelling with your mobility scooter that little bit easier.

Back in October last year, the increasingly popular taxi company Uber launched a new feature to their London services. uberASSIST is a ‘transport option to provide additional assistance for disabled riders and others with access needs, including those who may just feel more comfortable with an extra hand when getting from A to B at the tap of a button.’

Getting around the city can be a struggle for anyone, so it’s great to know that at the tap of an app you can relax knowing that your every need is being taken care of whilst travelling around the city.

uberASSIST

Uber created the service as they weren’t impressed with the accessibility of London’s transport network. Only 24% of London’s underground stations have step free access, and new research suggests that those who are disabled use taxis and other private hire vehicle services more than those who are not disabled.

Uber have worked with Transport for All to develop uberASSIST, making sure that it offers the same convenience, reliability and safety features of standard Uber journeys – all at affordable prices.

Uber reassure that you will have complete ease of communication, driven by a driver that has completed a disability equality course delivered by Transport for All and Inclusion London. Uber’s vehicles can accommodate most folding mobility scooters, and are hoping to add fully accessible mobility scooter vehicles to their service this year.

  1. Download the Uber app and create your account

Affordable accessibility

Robin Hindle Fisher, Chair of the Extra Costs Commission, said of the service: “Life costs more if you are disabled. Research shows that this adds up to an average of £550 per month. I was pleased to chair the Extra Costs Commission which set out to identify ways to drive these costs down. We heard time and time again from disabled people that they are paying far too much for private hire vehicles and taxis.

“That’s why we are pleased that Uber have taken on this challenge by launching uberASSIST to better train their drivers, increase the accessibility of their vehicles, and drive down these extra costs disabled people face.”
