The National Football Museum in Manchester is the World’s biggest and best football museum and home to the game’s greatest stories. From the players and games to the fans, the whole scope of football is covered here. No matter who your team is, you’ll find plenty of interesting and entertaining exhibits, from a Hall of Fame of players past and present, to fascinating facts about how football became the global phenomenon it is today. There’s fan memorabilia, pitch-side photos, commentary and much more to see – and get involved in. You’ll even come face to face with the legendary 1966 Jules Rimet World Cup trophy!

Since 1989, Clarke has been capturing and documenting the ever-changing face of football. From fans to grounds, these evocative photographs tell the story of affection, purpose and passion in football.
  • Global Game: From a village sport to a global phenomenon, this exhibition explores the history of football. Tracking its journey to becoming the world’s most popular sport, here you’ll experience the rise of the global game. If you’re a big fan of the World Cup, this is the perfect place for you. The growth of the sport’s biggest competition is covered here. Why not learn all about how the World Cup came about and how each country joined? While you’re in the exhibition, make sure to see the 1966 Jules Rimet trophy. Presented to the England Football Team following their historic win at the 1966 World Cup, it’s a sight not to be missed for any football fan.
  • Pelé – Art, Life Football: This exhibition explores the life and career of football icon Pelé. Described as a player like no other, this global superstar defined what it means to be an elite footballer. From Santos to New York, with 4 World Cups in between, this exhibition tracks the iconic player through the eyes of photographers and artists from around the world. In addition to a superb collection of art inspired by the man, the National Football Museum has brought together iconic items from our own collection and those owned by private collectors to illustrate the life and career of the first man to truly transcend the global game. From memorabilia surrounding his career to performance stats, this exhibition celebrates a great player who truly changed the game.
  • Football+ opportunities: Should you upgrade your package, you’ll find a range of activities on offer. Using your Football+ credits, you’ll be able to take part in activities that put you in the centre of the game. The Match of the Day Commentary Challenge puts you in the box for a classic FA Cup moment. It’s the perfect place to test out your commentary skills. Where to eat and drink

While at the National Football Museum, stop for a snack at Café Football on the ground floor of the museum. Everything from the food to the décor captures the essence of the beautiful game. You can get everything from pies to cakes here, as well as a large selection of hot and cold drinks. Football Plus+ Season Ticket holders get 20% off everything in the café.

If you’re looking to treat yourself, head to The Rabbit in The Moon, located on floors 5 and 6. This restaurant from Michelin star chef Michael O’Hare brings fine dining to football.

Opening times

The National Football Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free, however, the museum is a registered charity and they welcome donations to support their work. You can upgrade your package through donations, information is available here.

Getting there

Located in the centre of Manchester, the National Football Museum is easily accessible by all forms of transport. If you are travelling by car, take the M60 and follow the brown signs indicating the National Football Museum. Blue Badge parking is available on Todd Street or at nearby car parks, including the Arena, Exchange, Shudehill and High Street. If you are travelling by train, the nearest train station is Victoria Station, a short 2-minute journey from the museum. As well as this, Victoria Station is home to a Metrolink stop, the best stop to get off at should you be travelling by tram. Frequent buses also service the area. Accessibility

The National Football Museum is fully accessible to all visitors. There are automatic doors at the main entrance, as well as lifts to all floors. The exhibit includes ramps to all raised areas and accessible toilets on the ground floor and levels 1, 2 and 4. In addition to this, there is Blue Badge parking available on Todd Street, outside Victoria Station. Bigger than ever before, the Liverpool Christmas Ice Festival is returning to its Pier Head location. This winter staple includes everything from ice skating to delicious food and drinks. As part of this week’s Accessible Attractions series, Quingo Scooters is heading to Liverpool for the Ice Festival.

Whether you want to see the sights from the Ferris wheel, visit the enchanted-forest themed ice bar or browse some of the delightful market stalls, there are plenty of activities taking place that everyone will enjoy!

What’s on

  • Christmas markets: Home to over 50 market stalls, this traditional Christmas market offers all the festive favourites. With stalls selling trinkets, crafts and decorations, its perfect for all your shopping needs. The markets also boast three outdoor German style bars and a Bavarian food court. Here you’ll be served international specialties, as well as classics, such as mulled wine and hot chocolate. As Liverpool’s biggest Christmas market, this is the perfect place to get into the festive spirit.
  • Fairground rides and games: New to the festival this year, there’s so much entertainment to be found. A notable attraction is the Ferris wheel, from which you can take in the sights of Liverpool’s famous waterfront and skyline. From rides for children to exciting attractions for adults, there’s something for the whole family.
  • Ice skating: Bigger than ever before, the ice rink makes a return to Pier Head. Situated at this historic location and with the Three Graces as a backdrop, you can ice skate under a clear canopy. The rink is accessible and carers skate free of charge.
  • Santa’s grotto: If you’re visiting with children, you can treat them to a visit to Santa in his grotto. Open until Christmas Eve, your children can talk to Father Christmas and receive a present.

Getting there

Located at Pier Head, the festival is accessible by all major forms of transport. If you are travelling by car, follow signs to Liverpool city centre, Albert Dock and central tourist attractions. You’ll find signposts for Pier Head Ferry Terminal from the city centre. Car parking is available near the waterfront. Blue badge parking is available nearby, at Q-Park Liverpool ONE, which has 81 Blue badge spaces. The festival can also be reached by public transport, including bus, coach, ferry and train. Accessibility

The Liverpool Ice festival is fully accessible for all guests. Surfaces are even and smooth, with many events taking place outside and on ground level. Quingo Scooters are back with another fun, family day out for all the family to enjoy, this week we’re heading to the north west of England for an attraction perfect for animal lovers! Where are we this week?

The zoo

Blackpool Zoo is a multi-award-winning family favourite with everything from zebras and penguins to giraffes and sea lions. As well as many animals calling Blackpool Zoo their home, it boasts incredible displays including the UK’s best sea lion display, an impressive array of birds and a host of animal experiences

Highlights include:

  • Gorilla Mountain – Gorilla Mountain is one of the most popular enclosures, offering natural surroundings for a family of Western Lowland gorillas. The island is accessed from their outside paddock and they spend much of their time there, enjoying the sunshine during summer and foraging for scattered food.
  • Lemur Wood – Lemur Wood was one of the UK’s first walk-through zoo enclosures, offering the chance to walk through with the stars of the DreamWorks’ film ‘Madagascar’. Popular with young visitors, there are three species of lemur in the enclosure, the lemurs enjoy jumping across the walkway to say hello to their visitors.
  • Active Oceans – Active Oceans consists of the zoo’s sea lion pool – the largest in the UK – a seating area for 400 people and a penguin pool with underwater viewing. Twice daily, the sea lions display their natural behaviours which are explained by their trainers. The Magellanic penguins are the only ones of their type in the UK – they love to meet visitors through the underwater glass.
  • Big Cats – the Big Cat House is home to African lions and Amur tigers, slotted in between the two is the meerkat enclosure – another popular destination. The lions enjoy a multi surface outdoor enclosure with a heated ‘rock’, with many hiding places for food the lions use their great sense of smell to find their meat.
  • Elephant and Reptile House – Asian elephants have been residents at Blackpool Zoo since its first opening in 1972, the indoor area of the elephant house is shared with a large collection of reptiles and invertebrates (insects), as well as two tanks of fish. Other species in the house include snakes, lizards, amphibians, tarantulas and much more.

The zoo is open every day from 10am, with the exception of Christmas Day when the zoo is closed. The closing times vary throughout the year, it is advised to check the closing times of the zoo when booking tickets online or planning your trip. For more information, visit the website here.

Getting there

Blackpool Zoo is just two miles inland from the attractions of the famous Blackpool Golden Mile. For visitors travelling by car, follow the M6 to junction 32 and take the M55 to junction 4, then follow the ‘brown elephant’ signs to the zoo.

For visitors travelling by bus, Blackpool Transport provides daily bus services to the zoo on lines 15 and 16, running every 30 minutes from Blackpool Town Centre, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Marton Mere Holiday Park.

For visitors travelling by train, trains run from two stations in Blackpool, it is recommended to use Blackpool North Station which is 5 minutes from the town centre.

Accessibility

There is level access throughout the whole of the zoo for scooters users, there are viewing options available at many of the enclosures to ensure that all visitors can view the animals. There are four toilet blocks on site, each including accessible toilets. The zoo offers level parking for up to 400 vehicles, including 12 dedicated spaces for blue badge holders, there is a parking charge of £2.50 per day. Quingo Scooters has some fantastic family fun for you this week – at Yorkshire Wildlife Park! It’s billed as the UK’s No.1 walk-through wildlife adventure and is another great British attraction to add to our Accessible Attractions series.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to some of the most amazing animals on the planet – from polar bears, lions, camels and baboons to creepy crawlies – all set in 70 acres of beautiful countryside. There are  over 400 animals and 70 different species, with a range of attractions, activities and displays:

  • Project Polar – the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Polar Bears International’s flagship project working towards saving and improving the welfare of this iconic species.
  • Lion Country – where you can see the park’s famous and majestic lions, who were flown from Romania to Yorkshire in 2010!
  • Land of the Tiger – home to endangered Amur tigers Vladimir, Sayan, Tschuna and Tschuna’s cub Hope, and it is one of the largest tiger exhibits in Europe.
  • Lemur Woods – takes visitors through the Madagascan world of the lemurs where you can watch them leaping along the tree tops.
  • Leopard Heights – home to the most endangered big cat in the world. Here you can witness Drake, Freya and their 2 cubs living in their spectacular home, designed as a purpose-built breeding and reintroduction facility to help preserve this precious species.
  • Giant Otter reserve – Gold medallist Rebecca Adlington opened the reserve last year, which is home to Mora and Alexandra.
  • Into Africa – featuring the endangered black rhino, antelope, giraffe, ostrich and zebras.
  • Meercat and Mongoose Manor –these fantastic, fun characters dig and play in a unique reserve.
  • Big Bugs – a brilliant live show that takes visitors into the land of creepy crawlies!
  • These are just some of the attractions, with much more to see and do at the park, including ranger and carnivore experiences and adoptions.

Opening times and ticket prices

The park is open every day from 10am until 6pm, except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (24 and 25 December), when it is closed. The last entry is at 5pm. Check before you travel because the park may be closed due to adverse weather.

Prices for the Summer Season (11 March-5 November) are: adults £17, senior citizens and students £15, people with disabilities £11 (adult), £9 (senior citizens), children £14 (aged 3-15), under 2s can visit the park free of charge, disabled children £8, official carer £6.

Discounts are available if you book online. Students, disabled visitors and carers should take the appropriate ID to claim their concession.

Getting there

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is  easily accessible by public transport from Doncaster town centre or by car via the A1 or M1.

Visitors travelling by bus can use the 57 to Finningley. This service stops in the village of Branton, a short taxi ride or 10-minute walk from the park down Brockholes Lane. Taxis are available outside the train station or you can book one in advance.

Visitors travelling by train are advised to plan their journey into Doncaster station and take the 57 bus to Finningley.

By car, visitors should enter the postcode DN4 6TB on SatNav. Once you reach the destination, please follow the signs for the car park.

From M18 Junction 3 – exit onto the Great Yorkshire Way, signposted Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Follow this A-Road for two miles until you reach a traffic light junction at the A638. Take the left lane signposted ‘Armthorpe’, join the A638, and in 300 meters turn right onto Warning Tongue Lane. The park entrance is half a mile along the lane on the right, just after the bridge.

From the A1, join the M18 at Junction 35 and follow the directions above. From the M1, join the M18 at Junction 32 and follow the directions above. For more information please see the Plan Your Visit page here.

Accessibility

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is accessible. It has on site car parking, with approximately 2,650 car parking spaces and 120 disabled parking spaces reserved for blue badge holders only. If you are getting dropped off, there is a drop off point right outside the main entrance. All pathways and cafes are accessible to wheelchair users. There are disabled toilets in the Safari Café, opposite the meercat enclosure, at the Monkey Playhouse Café, at Caramba and near the giraffes. Getting about in Liverpool

Travelling around Liverpool is incredibly easy as a mobility scooter user, as it has many accessible transport links in and around the city. There are specially designed accessible buses, which have wide doors, flat floors and low entrances. One of the most popular ways to explore Liverpool is on the Mersey Ferry; the ferries are also fully accessible, complete with toilet facilities. If bad weather has been forecast, it is advised to call ahead, as rough weather can often mean there is significant movement on the ferries. Being one of the most popular cities in the UK, there are many transport routes around Liverpool such as excellent train connections and direct flights from John Lennon airport.
