Quingo Accessible Attractions: Tate Liverpool

Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to get out and about to visit interesting or unusual places on their mobility scooters, especially places that you didn’t think were accessible enough. Over our series of blog posts we’ve been sharing with you some extremely accessible attractions to explore on your mobility scooter.

Today we’re heading to Merseyside to explore Liverpool’s Tate art gallery and museum.

Tate Liverpool

Located on the waterfront of Albert Dock, Tate Liverpool is part of Tate, which comprises of Tate St Ives in Cornwall, Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London. The art gallery and museum specialises in British and international modern and contemporary art. This includes British art from the year 1500 to the present day, along with international pieces. Hosting a programme of temporary exhibitions, Tate Liverpool was the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside London until 2003.

Opening in 1988, the gallery is housed in a converted warehouse within Albert Dock. The original conversion was done by James Stirling, but the building was given a major refurbishment in 1998 to create additional gallery space. Now, the foyer has an updated appearance and better proportions, as well as being even more accessible than before.

What’s on?

There are a number of exhibitions, films, performances, tours, talks and events happening at the Tate Liverpool all year round, which change frequently. Here are some current highlights that are not to be missed:

  • Tracey Emin and William Blake in Focus – This free exhibition runs until September 2017, and compares important works from the Tate collection, demonstrating a shared concern with birth, death and spirituality in both artists’ work.
  • Daily Talks – Join one of Tate Liverpool’s experienced guides on a themes journey through the galleries. This is the perfect place to start if it’s your first time at the gallery. This talk runs daily at 1pm.
  • Clore Learning Centre – This is a chance to play in the cubes, build dens and change the atmosphere of the room by experimenting with colour, images and objects on the projectors. Perfect for the whole family, this exhibit will run until the 5th March 2017.

Accessibility

Tate Liverpool is very accessible for mobility scooters. However, it is located within the Albert Dock Complex, which includes cobbles and York stone paving, so be sure to take extra care on this bit. There is level access to the gallery, with two automatic side doors to the entrance which are push pad operated.

On arrival, there is level access to the information desk. There are accessible toilets on the ground floor, where drop down rails are available if required. There are two lifts located opposite the main entrance, providing access to all levels in the gallery. There is also a café located inside Tate Liverpool which is fully accessible. The village is the perfect location for some relaxation where you can sit back, enjoy the shorefront and maybe spot a seal or two! Annan

A town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway, Annan is located in south-west Scotland. The cottages have incredible accessible facilities, whilst providing a holiday that is perfect for all ages – and pets are welcome!

On arrival to the cottage you’ll find a spacious, welcoming reception hall that has space for parking and charging your mobility scooter. Moving on the kitchen, this is equipped with ovens, cupboards and fridges at a lowered height. There is a rise and fall sink and hob, and an accessible dining table to enjoy your meals at.

In all of the bedrooms you’ll find either a twin or double contouring bed, a configuring bed, a king-size bed, and optional pull out additional beds. The bathrooms feature a rise and fall shower, high and low sinks, accessible toilets and ceiling track hoists.

Emirates Spinnaker Tower

Standing 170 metres above Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower is an established British icon. Taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big ben, the landmark observation tower opened in 2005. Part of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower’s shape was chosen by Portsmouth residents and reflects the city’s maritime history.

What is there to do?

Since opening, over 2.5 million people have made a trip to the Tower to appreciate the magnificent views. There are three decks on the tower – Deck 1, Deck 2 and the Sky Deck which is the highest deck.

You can start your experience by watching the Tower’s new animated film show where you can learn everything you need to know about Portsmouth’s past. After that you can surround yourself with breath-taking 350 degree city, country and seascapes stretching over 23 miles – definitely a sight you won’t forget in a hurry! There’s also a view guarantee offered by the Tower – if you can’t see the three Solent Forts on the day of your visit, you can return for free within 3 months. With i-view touchscreens and audio guides throughout, every member of the group will be engrossed.

On deck 2 you’ll discover the café, where you can enjoy afternoon tea whilst you take in the spectacular views.  Also available are a selection of sandwiches, sweet treats, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of teas and coffee. You can see the entire menu here.

If you want to make a night of it, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower also hosts their own Comedy Club. On selected nights throughout the year, you’ll be able to see famous acts from the best TV comedy shows such as Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, 8 out of 10 Cats and more.

Accessibility

Emirates Spinnaker Tower tried to enable as many visitors as possible to experience the stunning views it has to offer. Decks 1 and 2 are fully accessible via an internal lift and audio guides, group guided tours, informative guide books and other facilities are available.

There are some blue badge spaces in the car park which is nearby, with an accessible lift to take you up to ground floor level. There are also accessible toilet facilities in the Tower.

Today we discover something a little different, with lots of history and fantastic woodland scenery. Sherwood Forest

In Nottinghamshire stands a famous forest, known for its association with the legend of Robin Hood. In the 1200’s, which was thought to be the time of Robin Hood, the main London to York roar ran straight through Sherwood Forest. Travellers were often at the mercy of robbers living outside of the law – hence the name ‘outlaw’.  Sherwood Forest was opened as a country park to the public in 1969, and a portion of the Forest was designated a National Nature Reserve by English Nature in 2007. Home to the famous Major Oak, Sherwood Forest retains many very old oaks.

Sherwood Pines Forest Park

Sherwood Pines Forest Park has been a part of the forest since 2012, where you can feel cocooned in luxury in a natural setting. Wooded since the end of the ice age, Sherwood Forest has 3,300 acres of forest to explore from your cabin doorstep.

As soon as you arrive the outside world falls away, leaving you to relax in your cabin and enjoy the peaceful woodland views. Or maybe you’d like to take part in some of the many activities and see some of the great nature surrounding Sherwood Forest. You can cater for yourself, go out to eat or even get the Sherwood Pines team to deliver you a Pizza Night Pack for the ultimate cosy night in!

 Accessibility

The accessible cabin at Sherwood Pines is called Copper Beech. This two bedroomed cabin has everything you need to ensure you have a stress-free stay, including ramped access to the cabin and outside terrace. In the bathroom you’ll find a wet room with an accessible toilet and adjustable shower. Lowered cooking and sink areas in the kitchen also make cooking an easy task.

This can be a pet friendly cabin if you want to bring your furry friends with you, and this carries an additional charge of £10 per pet per night. There are parking spaces for two cars outside of the cabin making the transition into the cabin as easy as possible.

There are loads of extras you can order to make the cabin as luxurious as you like throughout your stay, such as in cabin spa treatments, champagne and chocolates and pre-ordered food. Have a look here for a full list.
