With museums, food, bars, shops and events to discover, there’s never a dull moment. Whether you’re here for a while or just a day tripper, Liverpool is perfect for any getaway.

Museum of Liverpool: Ever wanted to learn more about what makes Liverpool great? If so, the Museum of Liverpool is the perfect place for you! Reflecting the significance of the city, this attraction explores and explains its unique history and culture. There are a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions to catch while you’re here.

  • The Blind School: Did you know that Liverpool’s Royal School for the Blind was the first school for blind people in Britain and the second in the world? Here at the Museum of Liverpool, this exhibition explores what life was like for the pupils of the school over its 227-year history as well as the design and location of the different buildings that housed it. Featuring unique objects, spoken stories and film made with visually impaired and blind students from St Vincent’s School, the city’s work for the visually impaired comes to life.
  • Taking Liberties: Telling the story of Suffrage in Liverpool, this display is home to objects relating to women’s suffrage in the Museum of Liverpool’s collections. The 1918 Club – a discussion forum for women in Liverpool – have even written labels to explain why these objects were important and what they tell us about the Liverpool campaign to give women the right to vote. The perfect place to learn all about women’s suffrage!
  • The end of the line: 60 years on from Liverpool’s last tram, this exhibition pays homage to the transport that got Liverpool moving. This immersive exhibition takes you through the history of trams, from the pioneering development of the tram system in 1860 Birkenhead to the first official trams on the streets of Liverpool in 1868 to the last service in 1957. If you’re interested in transport, this is the unique exploration of the landmark mode of public transport is a must-see.

The museum is fully accessible too. The entrance to the museum is flat, featuring automatic doors. There is lift access to all floors and accessible toilets – labelled ‘changing places toilets’ – throughout the museum. More information can be found here.

Tate Liverpool: If you’re an art lover, there’s no doubt about it – this is the place for you! Tate Liverpool, part of the Tate museums, is an art gallery and museum that specialises in British and international modern and contemporary art.

This fully accessible museum offers a level access information desk, accessible toilets, lifts to all floors and a fully accessible café. Hosting a number of temporary exhibitions, this museum makes use of a wide range of media to bring cutting edge art to you.

  • Ken’s Show – exploring the unseen: This exhibition was 30 years in the making – and it shows! Bringing lovingly sourced works, Art Handler Ken Simons is showcasing what has made Tate Liverpool an iconic art gallery. Celebrating Tate Liverpool’s 30th birthday – and Ken’s 30-year career there – this display explores the unseen or mysterious spaces in our world and point to Ken’s particular interest in sculptural and landscape art. With some of the Tate’s most popular pieces back on display, this can’t be missed.
  • Life in motion – Egon Schiele/ Francesca Woodman: Described as A close encounter with deeply personal and powerful works of art, this exhibition showcases intimate and unapologetic portraits, which look beneath the surface to capture their subjects’ emotions. Using Schiele and Woodman, 2 renowned artists for drawing and photography, respectively, you’ll observe a new perspective on their personal and powerful works. An unforgettable experience.

Liverpool Echo Arena: While you’re in Liverpool, why not catch a show at the Echo Arena? Noted for being ‘designed with accessibility in mind’, this purpose-built venue is the perfect addition to any trip. Whether you’re interested in live music, comedy performances or sporting events, they’re always something entertaining to catch at the arena.

What’s more, this arena is amazingly accessible. There are more than 10 accessible toilets, accessible drop off points and accessible seating bays, lifts in the car park which feature mirrors to make reversing easier and a personal assistance scheme. With plenty of Blue Badge parking to be found near the arena, including the Albert Dock car park – located 4 minutes from the venue – the Echo Arena has all you need. Where to eat and drink

Liverpool is home to a wide range of accessible restaurants and cuisine, so there’s always something to try no matter what your taste.

If you’re a fan of sports – specifically Liverpool Football Club – The Boot Room Sports café is the perfect place for you. Located in Liverpool’s ground, Anfield, this café brings together exciting sport, delicious food and a sense of sporting history. With a wide range of food and drink on offer, you’ll find everything from light sandwiches to hot meals. Whether you’re a Liverpool fan or not, this is a great place to stop for a bite to eat.

Did you know that Peaky Blinders was actually filmed in Liverpool? Fans of the tv show are also in luck! Liverpool is home to a themed bar centred around this loved tv show. The Peaky Blinders Bar offers 1920s cocktails, a range of beers and wines and even snacks from their ‘Street Food Alley’. Step back in time to the Shelby’s Birmingham in this immersive bar!

There are also a number of cafés and bars in the area. From the Brunch Club – the perfect stop for brunch- to the Cavern Club – the famous bar known for live music – there are so many food and drink stops in Liverpool. It’s time to get exploring!

Getting there

As a major city, Liverpool is easily accessible by all major forms of transport. If you are travelling by car, take the M6 and then the M62, M58 or M56 direct to your destination. There are plenty of Blue Badge parking bays throughout the city’s roads. As well, car parks, such as the Liverpool Waterfront Car Park and the Liverpool One Car Park, offer a number of Blue Badge spots. Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: The World Museum, Liverpool

Exploring from the sea to the stars, from when dinosaurs roamed the earth to human civilisations spanning many millennia, the World Museum in Liverpool offers an up-close look at the wonders of the natural world. With so much to see, including the Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China to an interactive display of the night sky, there’s something for all ages and interests. It’s no wonder it was the winner of Family Go Live’s best day out for under 12’s award in 2014.

This week, Quingo Scooters is heading to the World Museum to learn more about the history of our wonderful world. Covering all corners of the globe and its diverse cultures, let’s look at what’s on offer…

What’s on

  • Ancient Egypt: Taking a 5000-year journey around this ancient civilization, history lovers will be fascinated by the many wondrous artefacts and displays. With one of the largest Egyptian collections in the UK, you’ll see such treasures from a sculpture of the head of Zeus Ammon to a relief carving in limestone of Thutmose and even a model of an Egyptian kitchen. With so much to discover over 1,000 square feet, there are more than 2,700 items in this internationally significant collection.

Must see: Egyptian mummies loom large in popular imagination and culture, so why not see one for yourself? The World Museum is home to a mummy of a young boy. With decorative wrapping and a painted panel portrait, you can learn all about this ancient preservation method.

  • World Cultures Gallery: The history of the world is on display in this incredible exhibition! Drawing on huge ethnographic collections, you’ll encounter artefacts from the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania, the exchange of ideas between various cultures is examined. Using both historical and contemporary perspectives, the stories and backgrounds behind the objects are explored in fascinating detail.
  • Planetarium: Travelling through space and time, this exciting adventure brings the Universe closer. Throughout the week there are different informative talks and presentations. From exploring lunar phases to the journey of cosmic discovery and even seeing the constellations of the night sky, the Planetarium has something of interest for all ages. Must see: A new show to the area, Sunstruck, is an astounding expedition through time. Travelling back to the birth of the sun, it uncovers how it came to support life and how its energy will one day fade away. Using several NASA heliophysics missions, this educational voyage is a valuable experience for all.

  • Natural World: The wonders of the natural world come to life in the museum’s Natural World section. Get a close-up view of live colonies of insects and discover a range of animal specimens. From the plains of Africa to the rainforests of South America, this gallery must be seen by all animal enthusiasts.
  • Aquarium: Diving into the watery depths, you’ll meet a vast range of marine life. With tropical, mangrove and native fish all on display, the aquarium uses the latest technology to bring you fish from Australia to Anglesey. Whether you’re fascinated by Falseclown fish and beautiful rainbow-coloured fish or are more interested in Thornback Rays and coldwater fish, these specially designed tanks mimic the animal’s native habitats. This is the perfect place to immerse yourself in life under the sea!

Must see: Get up close and personal with these incredible creatures in the Living Laboratory. This dedicated learning and activity space has special low-level tanks and expert staff on hand ready to answer any questions.

  • Dinosaurs Gallery: Have you ever wanted to come face to face with a dinosaur or wondered what the world looked like in the Jurassic Period? The Dinosaur Gallery brings to life this period of history in an exciting and immersive experience. Entering through a time tunnel, you’ll see how much life has changed through geological time. From investigating the sandstones slabs that contain the footprints of extinct animals to witnessing the Allosaurus about to attack the Camptosaurus, dinosaur fans will be captivated.

Must see: No trip to the Dinosaur Gallery is complete without meeting the Megalosaurus! This full-sized cast of a Megalosaurus skeleton offers an up-close perspective on the size and might of these incredible creatures.

  • Terracotta Warriors: Coming in February 2018, this exhibition is bringing one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries to Liverpool. Spanning almost 1000 years of Chinese history, you’ll see how the underground army of life-sized terracotta warriors secretly guarded the tomb of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, and how they came to be. Covering the conflict of the Warring States period to the achievements and legacy of the Qin and Han dynasties, this is an unforgettable glimpse into Chinese history and culture. With many objects never before seen in the UK, the Terracotta Warriors display is a must see for everyone!
  • Clore Natural History Centre: History doesn’t get more hands-on than this! From touching a hippopotamus skull to holding a mammoth tooth to even examining a tropical butterfly, you’ll witness the history of the natural world in a personal way. With interactive displays and activities, you’ll uncover the history and connect with the natural world!
  • Weston Discovery Centre: If human history is your interest, this section is perfect for you. Using the museum’s archaeology and ethnology collections, you’ll discover the stories behind who made and used these objects. From handling 5000-year-old artefacts to learning about ancient weaving skills, you’ll be fascinated by tales of humanity and society throughout history.
  • Treasure House Theatre: The World Museum’s fascinating collections are explored in captivating and personal forms in this theatre. Bringing history to life, there are always new and exciting events to discover. One day you may find yourself taking part in a hands-on activity, while other days you can watch a live video conference link. Eating and drinking at the World Museum

A must for any visit, the café at the World Museum is the perfect place to eat, drink and relax in an amazing setting. Once the grand exam hall of the Technical School of Liverpool, opened in 1901, this space still features its impressive and intricate plasterwork. Through recent renovations, the original artwork is still an amazing sight to see here.

This historic setting is also home to a delicious menu. With a wide selection of classic hot meals, soups, sandwiches, salads and hot and cold drinks, this new café is serving up all your favourites. Opening times and prices

The World Museum Liverpool is open daily from 10am to 5pm, except for 24-26 and 31 December, when it is closed all day. Plus, it’s free entry for everyone.

Getting there

The World Museum is in Liverpool city centre, close to the entrance to Lime Street train station and the Queensway tunnel. If you are travelling by car, the postcode is L3 8EN and there are Blue Badge spaces available outside the attraction on William Brown Street. The nearest train station is Liverpool Lime Street and the area is serviced by regular buses. Further information on planning your journey can be found here.

Accessibility

Acknowledged in the Vitalise Accessible UK Tourism Report 2014, the World Museum was rated the third most accessible tourist destination in the UK. With automatic doors at the entrance, the main entryway is level. There are lifts to all floors and accessible toilets are on all floors. Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: British Music Experience

With more than 600 items of music memorabilia and interactive experiences, the British Music Experience offers a journey through sound that defines generations. As part of our Accessible Attractions series, this week Quingo Scooters heads to Liverpool.

The city’s British Music Experience explores the history of British music with exhibitions showcasing costumes, instruments and memorabilia. From the Beatles and David Bowie to the Spice Girls and Oasis, the stories of the biggest artists are played out visually. Whatever age you are and whatever style of music you love, you’re sure to be entertained!

What’s On

There’s always plenty to soak up at the British Music Experience, from permanent galleries and activities, to an everchanging and exciting series of events.

  • Weekend Gibson Open Sessions (every Saturday 1-3pm): Guests – from beginners to experienced musicians – are welcome at the Gibson Open Sessions on Saturdays. Here you get the chance to experience top-flight electric guitars, drumkits and keyboards, with in-house experts on hand to provide valuable tips.
  • Dance the Decades Experience (permanent): Learn all of the moves that characterised decades of music, bringing together over 70 years and 12 iconic dance styles. Suitable for all ages, this experience fuses history and music to create a fun and immersive event for the whole family.
  • 24-Hour Party People with Dave Haslam (29 November, 7pm): Celebrating Manchester’s music scene of the late 80s/early 90s, the British Music Experience is screening ’24 Hour Party People’ followed by a conversation with DJ Dave Haslam. Through the film and talk, you will be able to relive the Madchester glory days, looking at the creation of the legendary Factory Records label and the success of The Hacienda.

Ticket Prices and Entry

The British Music Experience is open daily, excluding the 25 and 26 December. It is open from 10am to 5pm. Ticket prices vary, with more information available here.

Getting There

Situated on Liverpool’s Waterfront, the British Music Experience is based in the Cunard Building. If you are arriving by public transport, you’ll find several options available to you. If you’re travelling by train, the nearest drop off points are James Street and Moorfields, both a short distance from the exhibition. All buses into Liverpool stop off at the Liverpool ONE bus station, which is adjacent to Liverpool Waterfront. In addition, the experience is located directly opposite the Mersey Ferry terminal, if you’re arriving by boat. Those travelling by car will find the route well-signposted with some blue-badge parking on-street, however, this is limited. There is a coach drop off point available outside the main entrance. Accessibility

There are two entrances to the British Music Experience, with the accessible entrance on Brunswick Street. This can be reached via a ramp, with intercom at the door to provide further assistance. Alternatively, staff outside the main entrance on Canada Boulevard can provide assistance. The main space provides plenty of seating and there are accessible toilets throughout the exhibition. The ticket desks have lowered counters and all circulation spaces are fully accessible, including the Merch Store and Star Café. Quingo Accessible Attractions: Tate Liverpool

Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to get out and about to visit interesting or unusual places on their mobility scooters, especially places that you didn’t think were accessible enough. Over our series of blog posts we’ve been sharing with you some extremely accessible attractions to explore on your mobility scooter.

Today we’re heading to Merseyside to explore Liverpool’s Tate art gallery and museum.

Tate Liverpool

Located on the waterfront of Albert Dock, Tate Liverpool is part of Tate, which comprises of Tate St Ives in Cornwall, Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London. The art gallery and museum specialises in British and international modern and contemporary art. This includes British art from the year 1500 to the present day, along with international pieces. Hosting a programme of temporary exhibitions, Tate Liverpool was the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside London until 2003.

Opening in 1988, the gallery is housed in a converted warehouse within Albert Dock. The original conversion was done by James Stirling, but the building was given a major refurbishment in 1998 to create additional gallery space. Now, the foyer has an updated appearance and better proportions, as well as being even more accessible than before.

What’s on?

There are a number of exhibitions, films, performances, tours, talks and events happening at the Tate Liverpool all year round, which change frequently. Here are some current highlights that are not to be missed:

  • Tracey Emin and William Blake in Focus – This free exhibition runs until September 2017, and compares important works from the Tate collection, demonstrating a shared concern with birth, death and spirituality in both artists’ work.
  • Daily Talks – Join one of Tate Liverpool’s experienced guides on a themes journey through the galleries. This is the perfect place to start if it’s your first time at the gallery. This talk runs daily at 1pm.
  • Clore Learning Centre – This is a chance to play in the cubes, build dens and change the atmosphere of the room by experimenting with colour, images and objects on the projectors. Perfect for the whole family, this exhibit will run until the 5th March 2017.

Accessibility

Tate Liverpool is very accessible for mobility scooters. However, it is located within the Albert Dock Complex, which includes cobbles and York stone paving, so be sure to take extra care on this bit. There is level access to the gallery, with two automatic side doors to the entrance which are push pad operated.

On arrival, there is level access to the information desk. There are accessible toilets on the ground floor, where drop down rails are available if required. There are two lifts located opposite the main entrance, providing access to all levels in the gallery. There is also a café located inside Tate Liverpool which is fully accessible.
