Quingo Accessible Attractions: Tate Liverpool

Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to get out and about to visit interesting or unusual places on their mobility scooters, especially places that you didn’t think were accessible enough. Over our series of blog posts we’ve been sharing with you some extremely accessible attractions to explore on your mobility scooter.

Today we’re heading to Merseyside to explore Liverpool’s Tate art gallery and museum.

QUINGO ACCESSIBLE ATTRACTIONS: TATE LIVERPOOL 2

Tate Liverpool

Located on the waterfront of Albert Dock, Tate Liverpool is part of Tate, which comprises of Tate St Ives in Cornwall, Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London. The art gallery and museum specialises in British and international modern and contemporary art. This includes British art from the year 1500 to the present day, along with international pieces. Hosting a programme of temporary exhibitions, Tate Liverpool was the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside London until 2003.

Opening in 1988, the gallery is housed in a converted warehouse within Albert Dock. The original conversion was done by James Stirling, but the building was given a major refurbishment in 1998 to create additional gallery space. Now, the foyer has an updated appearance and better proportions, as well as being even more accessible than before.

What’s on?

There are a number of exhibitions, films, performances, tours, talks and events happening at the Tate Liverpool all year round, which change frequently. Here are some current highlights that are not to be missed:

  • Tracey Emin and William Blake in Focus – This free exhibition runs until September 2017, and compares important works from the Tate collection, demonstrating a shared concern with birth, death and spirituality in both artists’ work.
  • Daily Talks – Join one of Tate Liverpool’s experienced guides on a themes journey through the galleries. This is the perfect place to start if it’s your first time at the gallery. This talk runs daily at 1pm.
  • Clore Learning Centre – This is a chance to play in the cubes, build dens and change the atmosphere of the room by experimenting with colour, images and objects on the projectors. Perfect for the whole family, this exhibit will run until the 5th March 2017.

Accessibility

Tate Liverpool is very accessible for mobility scooters. However, it is located within the Albert Dock Complex, which includes cobbles and York stone paving, so be sure to take extra care on this bit. There is level access to the gallery, with two automatic side doors to the entrance which are push pad operated.

On arrival, there is level access to the information desk. There are accessible toilets on the ground floor, where drop down rails are available if required. There are two lifts located opposite the main entrance, providing access to all levels in the gallery. There is also a café located inside Tate Liverpool which is fully accessible. More information on accessibility can be found on the Tate Liverpool website.

Quingo Accessible Routes: Holsworthy, Devon

Quingo Scooters know just how great it is to get outdoors and into the countryside, to get some fresh air and appreciate the fantastic scenery! In our Accessible Routes series, we’re sharing some outdoor routes for you to take on your mobility scooter.

QUINGO ACCESSIBLE ROUTES: HOLSWORTHY, DEVON 2

Holsworthy, Devon

In the district of Torridge, Devon, you’ll find the small market town and civil parish of Holsworthy. The closest city is Exeter 36 miles away, and the river Deer runs through the western boundary of the parish. With a small population of around 2,500, Holsworthy is a traditional market town with a bustling weekly cattle and goods market.

QUINGO ACCESSIBLE ROUTES: HOLSWORTHY, DEVON 3

Accessible Route

Name: Holsworthy

Type of route: Circular

Distance: 1.5 miles

Gradient: Steep in places

Terrain: Easy

Facilities: Pub, Toilets, Café

The route starts at Manor Car Park, next to the Holsworthy Leisure Centre. From here, you should take the slope down towards Victoria hill. Turn left on Victoria hill, and then left into Sanctuary Road where you will see a footpath between two trees. The kerb here is slightly raised, so take extra care.

Follow the path around to the start of the footpath that is by the rear of the Community School. After around 20 yards, turn right along this footpath – there should be some metal railings on your left. Keep on this path until you get to the footbridge going over Victoria hill road and proceed to Holsworthy Leisure Centre. Go through the car park with the leisure centre on your left, past the scout and guide headquarters and on to the slope. The railings are signposted Sustrans cycle route here. Go over the bridge and then follow the path round by the side of the swings, the play park should be on your right.

Now bear right, following the ‘route 3’ sign. Then, bear left past the old pavilion, which will be on your right hand side. Then it’s on to the gate into the Old Showground field. If you want to avoid the terrain here in cases of bad weather, you can choose not to go into the field as the walk returns back to this gate. If you do go into the field, bear left and follow the path round in a clockwise direction, returning back to the gate.

Finally, go back into the park but this time bear right around the footpath that goes in front of Bowls Club, and continue back to the entrance of the Leisure Centre Car Park. Now retrace your path back over the two bridges to Sanctuary Road, into Victoria Hill and into Manor Car Park.

For your information, there are accessible toilets on the road opposite the church, and there are several cafés surrounding if you fancy a bite to eat.

QUINGO ACCESSIBLE ROUTES: MILLS PIT AND COMMON, BEDFORDSHIRE 2

Arlesey, Bedfordshire

Arlesey is a large village in Bedfordshire, located near the border with Hertfordshire and about three miles north-west of Letchworth Garden City.  Through the mid twentieth century, Arlesey had a thriving brick making industry, with five brickworks operating around the town in 1900. The Blue Lagoon is now used for sailing, whilst the Green Lagoon is used for fishing.

The route starts at the village hall, where you should leave the car park and turn left. You’ll then meet a multiple junction after about a quarter of a mile – this is the old site of the village pump. Interestingly, a replica of this can be found outside the village hall where the route starts and ends.

Here, you should turn right and head up the hill to the railway bridge. Immediately over the bridge, turn right and follow the track to the bottom of the hill and round to the left to the end of Mill Lane.

Follow the path through the kissing gate along the riverside path. Here you’ll find two disabled fishing points if that’s something you’re interested in. After that you’ll pass through another kissing gate, where the footpath finishes and you enter the Mill Pits Meadows. Follow this to the bridge and you’ll find a weir on the river where there are two accessible picnic tables. This is a site of one of the old mills, and the remains of the millrace can even be seen in the water.

This is a great opportunity to relax and take in the sights of the river and the wildlife. The river has an abundance of fish, and you may even see a Kingfisher flash past. When you’re ready to return to the village hall, simply go back the way you came.

Quingo Accessible Routes: Dodd Summit Trail – Keswick, Cumbria

Here at Quingo Scooters we know just how great it is to get outdoors and into the countryside, to get some fresh air and appreciate the fantastic scenery! In our new series, we’ll be sharing some accessible routes for you to take on your mobility scooter.

Keswick

In the heart of the Lake District National Park you’ll find Keswick, a northwest market town. Surrounded by mountains such as Skiddaw, the scenery is something to marvel at. The Cumberland Pencil Museum documents the history of pencils and the Keswick Museum & Art Gallery displays local artefacts. The vast Derwent Water lake is located at the south of the town, where you can enjoy boat tours and the Theatre by the Lake.

Accessible Route

Name: Dodd Summit Trail

Type of route: Circular

Distance: 4.5 miles

Gradient: Minimal

Terrain: Medium

Facilities: Toilets, Café

The Dodd Summit Trail gives fantastic panoramic views, which include those of Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite Lake, the Solway Coast and even the hills of Dumfries and Galloway. This trail passes through wooded slopes, an open hill and spectacular sights.

The walk starts at the car park, and is also the starting point for several other walks through this forest. All walks are described in a leaflet which is available at the Old Sawmill Tea Room.

It’s recommended to first make your way to the lower viewpoint, which is open every day between 10am and 5pm. From this viewpoint you’ll be able to catch some extraordinary views of the ospreys fishing over the lake, as well as the bold red squirrels. Here, there is also information provided by the staff and volunteers, including how to safely make your way to the upper viewpoint.

Half a mile from the lower viewpoint you’ll reach the higher viewpoint, which can be accessed via the forest. It will take around 30 minutes to make your way here, and there is a steady gradient involved. Again staffed by volunteers, this viewpoint too has optics available which give some amazing views of the new nest, which is only 400m away. Due to reasons of nest protection, the upper viewpoint is only open between 10.30am and 4.30pm daily.

High powered telescopes are provided on this walk, but it’s a good idea to bring your own binoculars if you want a better look at the ospreys fishing, sitting, feeding and washing.

If you require any additional information you can contact the Whinlatter Visitor Centre on 01768 77846.
