Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: National Museum of Scotland

Quingo Scooters are going exploring this week, as part of our Accessible Attractions series, discovering the natural world, art and science and technology under one roof – in Scotland.

The National Museum of Scotland is part of four museum sites within Scotland; alongside the National War Museum, National Museum of Flight and the National Museum of Rural Life.

The museum

The National Museum of Scotland has a range of galleries showcasing fascinating facts and artefacts from across the globe. The Natural World galleries tell the story of the planet, whilst the World Culture galleries link people and possessions. Within the Scottish galleries, visitors can follow the story of Scotland through from prehistory to the present day; including over 800 objects and the stories of Scots who took their ideas and innovations across the world.

Alongside the galleries, the museum has a range of exhibitions on show, including:

  • The Galloway Hoard (until 1 October 2017) – the Galloway Hoard is an extraordinary find of Viking-age gold, silver and jewelled treasures. It is the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland, bringing together over 100 gold, silver and other items from across Ireland, the Anglo-Saxon world, the Holy Roman Empire and Byzantium.
  • BUILD IT! A museum made from LEGO (until 31 December 2017) – a magnificent three-metre LEGO model of the National Museum of Scotland is now on display. Renowned brick artist Warren Elsmore and his team took over 350 hours and almost 90,000 bricks to build the model.
  • Age of Oil (until 5 November 2017) – the multimedia exhibition brings a unique perspective to the relationship between art, environment and industry. Linking closely to themes introduced in the Energise gallery, the exhibition considers the future of energy in Scotland.
  • Scotland’s Early Silver (25 February 2018) – the exhibition explores the impact of silver during the first millennium AD, as the most precious metal in Scotland for a thousand years. including jewellery, vessels, coins and other finds, the exhibition examines silver as the times change.

Ticket prices and opening times

Admission to the museum is free, visitors have the option to donate to the museum, however, this is voluntary. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm, the museum is closed on Christmas Day (25 December) and is open from 12pm to 5pm on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Getting there

For visitors travelling to the museum by bus, buses go via the city centre and stop outside the museum on Chambers Street, or nearby on George IV Bridge and South Bridge.

By train, the nearest station is Edinburgh Waverley, the museum is 10-15 minutes away from the train station.

For visitors travelling by car, follow signs towards Edinburgh city centre. Off-street parking is available nearby the museum at NCP sites.

Accessibility

There is level access to the museum via the main doors to the Entrance Hall on Chambers Street and the Tower entrance at the corner of Chambers Street and George IV Bridge. There are four designated public parking spaces available for visitors with mobility aids, there are no charges for these spaces, however, they cannot be booked in advance. There is level access throughout the museum with lifts available to all floors. The accessible toilets are available on most floors, these toilets can be located using a map of the museum as well as following signs.

Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: British Motor Museum

Quingo Scooters are in Warwickshire this week for another instalment of our Accessible Attraction series. One especially for the motor heads, The British Motor Museum has one of the largest collections of historic British cars in the country. Observe how motoring and family life has changed throughout the decades, as well as learning about memorable events such as the introduction of double yellow lines.

The museum

The museum has a range of events and exhibitions on offer for the whole family; whether your children or grandchildren have a love of cars or you’re a die-hard fan of all things motor related, there’s something on show for everyone to enjoy! Here are some of the events on offer for this September:

  • Summer Holidays Motoring Treasures Activities (until 3 September) – from 10am to 4pm your children can be introduced to the motoring world, learning about the past and present of cars. On “Museum Mondays” join in the fun for a 10-minute interactive playlet from costumed characters, stepping back in time to hear their stories. From Tuesday to Saturday, children are invited to make their very own motoring treasure using every day bits and bobs such as plastic bottles and craft paper.
  • Jaguar Breakfast Club (2 September) – the Jaguar Breakfast Club is a monthly meet open to all Jaguar owners and enthusiasts regardless of affiliation to a club, forum or group. If you’re a fan of all things Jaguar, why not take a trip!
  • Retro Truck Show (9-10 September) – the show features an impressive display of over 350 of the best modern classic trucks, manufactured between 1960 and 2000. The two-day show features some of the UK’s leading manufacturers such as Volvo, Scania and DAF.
  • Mini Motorists (18 September) – between 10.30am and 12pm, get involved with interactive games and activities with the little ones in your family. The event for under 5’s, lets them explore the world of cars through playful activities.

Opening times and entry prices

The museum is open daily from 10am-5pm, and is closed from the 24 December 2017 through to 1 January 2018 inclusive.

Entry prices to the museum are as follows: adults £14, children (5-16 years) £9, concessions £12 and children under 5 go free.

Getting there

By road the British Motor Museum is five minutes from Junction 12 of the M40, near the village of Gaydon. It is locally sign posted and is a short distance from the surrounding main roads. The museum has ample, free parking for all visitors.

By rail, the nearest stations are Warwick (8 miles), Leamington Spa (8 miles) and Banbury (11 miles). Taxi services are available to and from the station, a pre-booked taxi can be organised using the museum’s recommended supplier.

By bus, a regular bus service which visits the British Motor Museum operates between Leamington Spa and Fenny Compton. An additional service operates from Leamington Spa to the Museum, Monday through to Friday.

Accessibility

There is level access to all floors within the museum as well as level floors throughout the entire museum. There is a lift for use to the individual floors. There is ample parking available on site for all visitors to use. For blue badge parking, follow the white and blue signs.

Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: Southwark Cathedral, London

Quingo Scooters are taking a trip to the capital for this week’s addition to our Accessible Attractions series. An attraction that combines fascinating history with incredible architecture.

Southwark Cathedral is London’s oldest cathedral church building. It’s believed that there has been a church on the site since AD 606, or even earlier. Southwark Cathedral stands at the oldest crossing point of the tidal Thames, at what was the only entrance to the City of London across the river for centuries.

The Cathedral

Southwark Cathedral at London Bridge has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years, but only a cathedral since the creation of the diocese of Southwark in 1905. Between 1106 and 1538 it was the Church of an Augustinian priory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Much of the building today retains the basic form of the Gothic structure built between 1220 and 1420, although the nave is a late 19th century reconstruction.

The Cathedral runs normal daily services throughout the day, and is a popular venue for concerts, graduation ceremonies and special services. There are regular organ recitals held on Monday lunchtimes and Tuesday afternoons – a splendid feature of the church and well worthwhile for all visitors.

The Cathedral also offers a variety of exhibitions, including:

  • Caro Rathbone – An exhibition of paintings (2 September 2017) – Caro Rathbone’s paintings are largely abstract using oils, watercolours, gouache and mixed media. She aims to reflect the joys and tribulations of life in her work. The exhibition will open from 10am to 6pm.
  • Jim Grover – Of things not seen (2 October 2017) – Of things not seen is a photo-essay by the award-winning photographer Jim Grover, which tells the story of a year of ministry by the Reverend Kit Gunasekera. The exhibition will open from 10am to 6pm.
  • Chico Mentor – An exhibition of paintings (28 October 2017) – Chico paints in oil and acrylics on canvas to aim for a playful and happy expression with dynamic colours and shapes. The subjects are the people in London and Latin America, their customs and their religion. The exhibition will open from 10am to 6pm.

The Cathedral offers a guided tour led by a certified Cathedral guide on Fridays at 11am and 1pm, and Sundays at 1pm. Please contact the Cathedral before visiting to check whether a tour is available.

Opening times

The Cathedral is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 8.30am to 6pm. The Cathedral closes at 1pm on Christmas Day (25 December). There is access to all levels of the Cathedral via lifts or fixed portable ramps, there is level access on all levels of the Cathedral. Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: Discovery Museum, Newcastle

This week, as part of our Accessible Attractions series, Quingo Scooters are in the heart of Newcastle. If discovering ancient artefacts, as well as learning about maritime history, world-changing science and technology or fashion, interests you this attraction is perfect!

The Discovery Museum in Newcastle allows visitors to discover all about life in Newcastle and Tyneside, using interactive displays, it makes it the perfect place to learn and have fun.

The museum

The museum offers many great permanent displays as well as temporary exhibitions, including:

  • Turbinia (Permanent) – once dubbed the fastest ship in the world! Charles Algernon Parsons built the world’s first steam turbine powered ship, Turbinia, changing the face of maritime history. In 1897 the ship measured 32 metres long and was the fastest in the world at that time.
  • Enigma & the North East (until 1 April 2018) – providing the opportunity to witness a rare Enigma machine, used to code secret messages during WW2. The exhibit tells the stories of Tyneside-built ships HMS Bulldog and HMS Petard, involved in salvaging material from German U-boats which were vital for the teams to break the German Navy Enigma.
  • Newcastle Story (Permanent) – walk through the history of Newcastle from the Roman period up to the early millennium, stopping by the homes, communities and businesses of the past.
  • All the Fun of the Fair: 135 Years of The Hoppings (until 1 October 2017) – All the Fun of the Fair showcases the history of Newcastle’s much-loved Hoppings fair, first held on the Town Moor in 1882. Included are a collection of 50 vintage coin-operated amusement machines – perfect for testing your pinball skills!

Getting there

The museum is located on the edge of Newcastle city centre, it is 5 minutes away from Newcastle Central station as well as the Tyne & Wear Metro service.

Visitors travelling by car will find parking directly opposite the museum, however, this is very limited in busy periods. It is advised to park at the Grainger Town multi-storey car park located on Waterloo Street.

Accessibility

Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: Edinburgh International Book Festival

Each week Quingo Scooters aim to inspire you with great accessible days out within the UK. As part of our Accessible Attractions series, we’re heading up to Scotland this week. If you’re a bookworm you’ll want to keep reading!

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is held each summer within the heart of Edinburgh’s West End. The three-week celebration, held from the 12-28 August, is the largest of its kind in the world, offering something for all tastes and interests.

The festival

Including over 800 events over the three weeks, there’s a wide variety on offer for all the family, featuring well known authors as well as rising stars. Previous special guests have included J.K. Rowling, Ian Rankin, Harold Pinter, Alan Bennett, Germaine Greer and Zadie Smith.

This year the festival will be expanding, with two new venues there’s even more opportunity to be entertained. The Book Festival welcomes approximately 1000 authors which include novelists, poets, scientists, philosophers, sportsmen, illustrators, comic creators, and many more. Some of the events you’ll be able to attend are:

  • Frank Cottrell Boyce & Carl MacDougall – after writing the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, it was fitting for Frank Cottrell Boyce to have an exclusive preview of his debut collection of short stories. Reading alongside him is Scottish master storyteller Carl MacDougall with his own collection. The pair will appear on the opening day of the festival (12 August) in The Spiegeltent.
  • Isabel Bannerman & Julian Bannerman – Isabel and Julian reveal some of the inspirations behind their prize-winning gardens, suggesting ideas that may work on humble home plots. The duo will be appearing on 12 August in the Garden Theatre.
  • Julia Donaldson & Friends – international bestselling picture book author Julia Donaldson will appear for singing, dancing and rhyming fun. With the opportunity to discover her new book, What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday, your little ones won’t want to miss out! Meet a host of popular characters, including the Gruffalo. Tailored for ages 4-7, the event will take place on the opening day of the festival at the Baillie Gifford Main Theatre.
  • Greg James & Chris Smith: Not So Normal – BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James and newsreader Chris Smith team up for an energetic event full of enemies and adventure as they present their debut novel, Kid Normal. The pair will be hosting the event in the Studio Theatre, for ages 9+.

Getting there

All of the events at the Edinburgh Book Festival take place in venues in the tented Book Festival village in Charlotte Square Gardens, as well as along the west end of George Street. Princes Street is within two minutes of Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Waverly train station, Edinburgh bus station and other key locations in the city.

It is advisable to use public transport wherever possible as August is a busy period within Edinburgh, and parking is limited. There is a multi-storey car park in Castle Terrace, 10 minutes away from the Book Festival. In addition to this, there are metered parking spaces around Charlottes Square.
