What’s on

  • Health choices: Ever wondered what medicines were available to people living in Victorian times? This exhibition explores exactly that. With real cures being rare at the time, you’ll see some of the more unconventional options available, such as the many ways sea water was used.

Must see: The personal medicine chest of Prince Albert. This incredible piece of history shows how the nobility of the time were treated, how they stored their medicine and the unorthodox techniques used. You’ll be amazed at how far medicine has advanced since!

  • Wilkinson Apothecary Gallery: With over 600 on display, The Wilkinson Apothecary Gallery houses the Thackray Medical Museum’s unique collection of apothecary jars. This is the largest collection of its type in the world, spanning several centuries, from the 1500s to the 1800s. With 400 English examples and 200 from Italy and other countries, jars were used by pharmacists to store medicines. These beautiful jars are impressive works of art.
  • Hannah Dyson’s Ordeal: This galley raises the important question: would you rather go to the hospital now or in Victorian times? You’ll definitely make up your mind in this retelling of the true story of 11-year-old Hannah Dyson. After her leg was crushed by machinery at a mill where she worked in 1823, the surgeons fought to save her life. This display walks you through what happened to her, with realistic audio-visual displays highlighting the horror of surgery at this time. This isn’t for the faint hearted!
  • Pain, pus and blood: This exhibition brings to life the gruesome realities of surgery in this era to life. Providing a captivating insight into the history of medical procedures, this gallery highlights the truly incredible advances in surgical techniques that have been achieved since.
  • Life Zone!: Designed for younger guests, the fun, educational and interactive experience is a great learning tool. Whether they want to follow the progress of a pea through the intestines, discover how high they can jump, or even see how long human intestines are, all their medical questions will be answered here.
  • Having a baby: How much has the process of having a baby changed throughout the years? This exhibition draws on real-life stories to explore the history of pregnancy and giving birth, from the 1890s to the present day. Showing the development of pain relief, the rising need for qualifications and improving survival rates for both women and children. Anyone interested in childbirth will love this insight.
  • Leeds 1842: Transporting guests back to 1842, this exhibition introduces the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian street in the city. This interactive experience allows you to talk to characters living in this authentically recreated street. You can explore and discover what their homes are like, what’s causing their ailments and what can be done to help cure them.

Must see: The Disease in Retreat section. Serving as the perfect antidote to the disease-ridden Victorian street, this section offers a view into how science has tackled these illnesses over the years. You’ll experience an interesting look at the revolution in treatment and medical practice. The 19th century notions of health are particularly interesting contrasts to our modern-day understanding. This is a must for all interested in medical and scientific history!

  • New Frontiers of Surgery: Starting in the mid-1800s, you’ll travel through a showcase of surgical procedures in this enthralling gallery. The star of this exhibition is the introduction of general anaesthetic and antiseptics, highlighting how this paved the way for modern day procedures such as organ transplants.
  • Medicine and History Lecture Series: Those with an interest in all things medical will love this lecture series. A highly popular series of talks and discussions look at a wide range of topics and factors that have influenced changes in medicine and health. Whether you’re a trained medical professional or have little knowledge of the subject matter, these fascinating talks are great learning experiences for all.   • Paranormal Investigations: Do you believe in ghosts? If so, the Thackray Medical Museum is the place for you. Reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in Leeds, the museum is a popular venue for professional ghost hunters and paranormal enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re a believer or a sceptic, the Ghost Nights at Thackray are interesting insights into the paranormal.

Where to eat and drink

The Thackray Medical Museum has a café onsite that offers a range of food and drinks. Their menu includes a selection of tasty and homemade options, such as seasonal soup, made to order sandwiches, paninis and jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings. On weekdays, you can even find two hot daily specials! If you’re in a hurry, you can pre-order food to be ready at a time to suit you. The café also offers a traditional afternoon tea with a range of freshly made sandwiches and cakes.

Opening times and prices

The Thackray Medical Museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm, with last admissions at 4.15pm. On every third Thursday of the month, the museum offers late night opening until 8.30pm, with last admissions at 7.45pm. Prices vary per person, you can view the price list here.

Getting there

Located next to St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, the museum is 2 miles from the city centre and is accessible by all major forms of public transport. If you’re travelling by car, follow the signs for York (A64) and then follow the brown tourist signs for the Thackray Medical Museum. There is on-site Blue Badge parking. Accessibility

Thackray Medical Museum is accessible to all guests. There is plenty of seating throughout the attraction, with lifts to all floors. Throughout the venue, accessible toilets can be found. Free Blue Badge parking is available at the museum’s on-site car park, as well as additional Blue Badge parking at the multi-storey on Beckett Street. More information can be found here.

One of the UK’s most popular Christmas markets, Edinburgh has created six spectacular weeks of festive delights this year. Christmas celebrations cover the entire city, with plenty to see and do and a warming drink or delicious food on offer as you take it all in. As Quingo Scooters heads north, we’re bringing you a festive edition of our Accessible Attractions series to celebrate Edinburgh Christmas Markets!

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, you can take in the festivities of the Hogmanay street party or go shopping for unique gifts the whole family will enjoy. Edinburgh Christmas Markets provide the perfect festive fun – pre or post-Christmas Day – for everyone!

What’s on

  • 24 Days of Advent (1-24 December): Every day leading up Christmas, a real-life advent calendar will be opened. On each day, a building around Edinburgh that’s usually closed to the public will be opening its doors for you to explore. From the gin distillery to the National Museum of Scotland, there’s plenty for everyone to see and enjoy, all for free!
  • Scottish Markets: Located in St Andrew Square, you can find lots of amazing craft, food and drink. All locally sourced from Scotland, the treats include locally produced sausages, Edinburgh gin, Scottish brewed craft beer and beautifully crafted jewellery and woodwork. Open every day, it’s the perfect place to pick up a few presents or treat yourself this festive season.
  • Santa’s Grotto (18 November-24 December 2017): No Christmas market is complete without a Father Christmas. This chance for children to meet him is a delight for all, as you gather round to hear a festive fairytale. After meeting Father Christmas and his helpers, children will receive a small gift.

Opening times and prices

The attraction is free to enter and is open from 19 November to 7 January. East Princes Street Gardens, St. Andrew Square and George Street are open from 10am to 10pm, with various attractions open throughout the day. More information can be found here.

Getting there

Located in the heart of the city, Edinburgh Christmas Markets take place across multiple city centre locations. These are East Princes Street Gardens, St Andrew Square, Festival Square and George Street. The markets are accessible through all major transport links. If you are travelling by train, Edinburgh Waverly is located a short distance away from all locations. There is blue badge parking at various locations throughout the city, as well as buses and trams throughout the city. Although in different locations, the markets are a very short distance from each other, with plenty to see on the way. More information is available here.

Accessibility

The pathways through Edinburgh Christmas Markets have been made as even as possible, to aid accessibility and with ramps to many stalls. Some rides are accessible, including wider pods in the Big Wheel and wheelchairs are allowed on the ice rink.

Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: National Railway Museum York

Quingo Scooters is travelling north this week for our Accessible Attractions series; to an attraction sure to bring back the nostalgia of the days before modern cars and motorbikes. A great day out for the whole family or even with a group of friends!

We’re taking you to the National Railway Museum in York, on display are thousands of amazing objects and over 300 years of fascinating history. The museum includes some railway legends you truly wouldn’t want to miss out on.

Railway legends

The museum has many great locomotive legends on display within the great hall, here are just some of the highlights:

  • Mallard – designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the Mallard broke the world speed record for steam locomotives in 1938. It is yet to be beaten! Built in 1939, she carried passenger trains on the east coast mainline until 1963.
  • Replica Rocket – it’s rare that someone hasn’t heard of Stephenson’s Rocket. Engineered by George Stephenson and his son Robert, they were amongst the very first locomotive engineers.
  • Shinkansen – Japan’s high-speed railway revolution resulted in the bullet train – the forerunner of high-speed trains. The train would reach speeds of just over 130mph. The ‘Series 0’ Shin-kansen was built in 1974 and when Shin-kansen opened in 1964 it was a radical re-imaging of the passenger railway.
  • Duchess of Hamilton – the streamlined Duchess is an incredible piece of 1938 built Art Deco opulence. It was seen as a modern machine for a modern age.
  • Class 31 – designed to replace steam as part of the British Railways Modernisation Plan of 1955. The locomotive’s diesel engine was developed from the engines used in ships.
  • SECR ‘D’ class No.737 – the elaborate livery on this locomotive was created to help give the newly formed South Eastern and Chatham Railway a positive image.
  • Eurostar – the power car is at the centre of a new exhibition that acknowledges the historic role the train has served in connecting the UK with mainland Europe. As a marvel of modern engineering the average speed operates at 186mph, and is part of the series as the train that holds the current UK rail speed record of over 208mph.
  • Evening Star – was the last steam locomotive to be built for British railways. It was one of a total of 999 ‘standard’ locomotives designed for a wide variety of uses, from tank engines for local passenger trains to large freight engines.

What else is on?

In addition to the impressive collection of locomotives, visitors can listen to over 1,000 hours of recollections from 20th century railway workers. Hear stories from divers, preservationists, signal operators and more. Read the tales of anticipation, mischief and adventure as part of the museum’s Trainspotting season.

In Search Engine – the museum’s library and archive centre – visitors can find answers to their railway questions, discover more about the collection or relax with a railway magazine. Located in the archive are many artefacts such as:

  • Drawings and papers from railway works and companies
  • Records of individuals and families
  • Technical tests and records
  • Timetables
  • Magazines
  • Accident reports
  • And many more!

Opening times and entry

The National Railway Museum is open from 10am to 6pm daily (March – September) and 10am to 5pm (October – February), except on 24, 25 and 26 December. The museum has free entry, which gives visitors all the more reason to go! For more information go to the ‘Visit’ section of the website.

Accessibility

There is level access to the entrance of the museum from the main entrance. Other entrances don’t have level access so the main one is the best route in. There is no level access to the locomotives within the museum, but the Great Hall has level flooring suitable for scooter users. There are a variety of level changes throughout the museum, some exhibits are accessible by ramps. There are accessible toilets within the venue, the accessible toilets are located within the foyer entrance and the Great Hall. For more information visit the ‘Accessibility’ section of the website.

Getting to the museum

For visitors travelling to the museum by rail, the nearest train station is York. It is a few minutes away from the museum.

Visitors travelling by bus can use the Rawcliffe Park and Ride, which picks up and drops off just outside of the museum.

By car, visitors should aim their journey towards York. Once in the city, the museum is clearly signposted from all approaches. The car park for the museum is located on Leeman Road (£9 a day). Welcome to the wild

Within Regent’s Park sits a bustling zoo filled with animals and nature from all over the world. Set between heritage-listed buildings and beautiful gardens, the zoo boasts over 800 incredible animal species to discover. Visitors have the privilege of enjoying interactive experiences, displays, feeding times and talks all at no extra cost!

The newest edition to the ZSL London Zoo is the Land of Lions exhibit, three walkways cover the 2,500sqm exhibit, meaning you can get closer than ever to these mighty creatures. For the first time, big cat lovers can be immersed into an interactive activity, in order to help the veterinary team as they come to the rescue.

Some of the most popular animals, adored by many, are meerkats. They live in families, stand guard and babysit. Travel to southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert from the centre of London to learn about these adorable creatures.

Observe the monkeys in their natural habitat at the Bolivian inspired exhibit, it holds no boundaries between the animals and visitors. Getting up close and personal to your favourite animals has never been easier, so you can enjoy monkeying around…

Meet your favourite animals!

At the ZSL London Zoo, visitors have the chance to meet their favourite animals. An unforgettable experience to cosy up to some of the world’s most incredible animals. Meet and greet is available with many of the animals, such as:

  • Penguins
  • Giraffes
  • Kangaroos
  • Meerkats
  • Rainforest creatures

There’s even more to do at the London Zoo, daily events occur frequently – whether that be a talk or a feed there’s sure to be something to do! Demonstrations occur throughout the day, such as:

  • Going Underground
  • Giraffe High Tea

Ticket prices and opening times

For visits up to 29 October 2017 prices (at the gate) are: £29.75 for adults, £22 for children (3-15 years), free for children under 3 and £26.80 for concessions; all include a voluntary 10% donation. ZSL London Zoo is open every day of the year except Christmas Day. From 1 April 2017, the zoo is open from 10am, last entry at 5pm and closes at 6pm. From 4 September, the zoo will be open from 10am, last entry at 4.30pm and closes at 5.30pm. from the 21 October 2017, the zoo is open from 10am, last entry at 4pm and closes at 5pm. Accessibility

The zoo is more than 170 years old and contains many old buildings, 12 of the buildings are listed. The majority of the zoo is accessible for scooter users, lift access is available in the Tiger Territory for people wishing to access the higher viewing platform. The aquarium has scooter friendly access via an entrance to the left of the main doorway. The Lubetkin penguin pool has limited access however, there are plenty of areas to still watch and enjoy the animals.

The zoo paths are generally tarmac with level or ramped access to most of the buildings. The slopes leading to the two tunnels in the zoo are rather steep.

Accessible toilets are located throughout the zoo site; toilets for men and women are located opposite BUGS and in the Children’s Zoo. Men’s only toilets are located by the aquarium, women’s only toilets are located near the African Aviary and zoo entrance.

There are six disabled parking bays near the zoo entrance, five are in the small car park opposite the entrance and one bay is immediately in front of the entrance. Getting to the zoo

Visitors travelling to the zoo by tube can use Camden Town and Regent’s Park stations, within walking distance of the zoo. Baker Street station can also be used as well as a short bus ride. Regent’s Park station is 20 minutes away from the zoo, Camden Town 15 minutes and Baker Street is 30 minutes away or a short bus ride.

Camden Town has Northern Line connections, Regent’s Park has Bakerloo Line connections and Baker Street has Jubilee, Bakerloo and Metropolitan Line connections.

By bus, the 274 service runs from Marble Arch and Baker Street to Ormonde Terrace. The C2 route should be picked up from Victoria station, Oxford Circus or Great Portland Street to Gloucester Gate. For more information on tube or bus services, visit the Transport for London website.

Visitors travelling by car should first follow directions for the centre of the city, before following directions for Regent’s Park.

Quingo Scooters Accessible Attractions: Museum of Liverpool

This week, Quingo Scooters are travelling to Merseyside as part of our Accessible Attractions series. Just a few short weeks ago we visited Liverpool as part of our Accessible Getaways series, and now we’re back to the north west!

The Museum of Liverpool reflects the significance of the city, known for its unique history and culture, this attraction is one you won’t want to miss out on.

The museum and exhibitions

The Museum of Liverpool stands proudly next to Liverpool’s famous waterfront. Visitors can explore how the port, the city’s people, and its creative and sporting history, have shaped this city. The museum of Liverpool has many featured exhibitions currently on display, as well as some interesting displays upcoming.

  • Liverpool & Hong Kong Reflections – reflects on Liverpool and Hong Kong, discovering the similarities and differences between the two global cities. Both are home to prosperous ports and bustling streets, as well as diverse populations.
  • Reel Stories – a special exhibition including more than 40 original film posters and memorabilia, celebrating Liverpool’s starring role in film over the past 60 years.
  • Gerry and the Pacemakers – opening on Friday 14 July features more than 30 photographs; capturing the wit, warmth and energy of the Merseybeat group during their rapid rise to fame.
  • The Magic Clock – in partnership with Homotopia, the Museum of Liverpool will be marking the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexual acts in England and Wales (1967 Sexual Offences Act).

As well as exhibitions, the museum has a range of displays for visitors to learn more about the wonderful city of Liverpool.

  • Growing up in the city: in photographs – a display of rarely seen images shows snapshots of Liverpool children’s experiences growing up. Many images showcase friendships, family and a fun childhood; whilst others show a different reality, such as working to support their families, war-time evacuation and ill health.
  • There’s no place like Garlands! – open until early June 2017 this display showcases items from the museum’s LGBT collections. Garlands was Liverpool’s first after-hours gay club, it became one of the most popular venues for nightlife in Liverpool.

Ticket prices and opening times

Entry to the museum is free of charge for all visitors, perfect for a great family day out without the expense! Museum opening times are 10am – 5pm daily.

Accessibility within the museum

The entrance to the museum is flat and also features automatic doors as well as lift access to all floors. Cloakroom lockers are available for visitors to store any personal possessions they don’t want to carry around with them.  Getting there

For visitors travelling by train, the closest station is James Street. Only a few minutes away from the museum, the station is served by the Wirral Line trains only. Moorfields station, served by the Northern and Wirral Lines, is 5 minutes away from the museum. Liverpool Central station is 15 to 20 minutes away, and is served by the Northern and Wirral Lines. The museum is 20 minutes from Liverpool Lime Street station – the main train station in Liverpool. For more information, please visit the Merseyrail website.

By bus, the nearest station is at Paradise Street close to the Liverpool ONE complex. Some bus services drop off at the Pier Head, just by the museum. For more information visit the Merseytravel website.

Visitors travelling by car should follow signposts for the Albert Dock from the motorway and other main routes into the city centre. For more information on planning a route by car, visit the AA Route Planner website.

There are six blue badge parking spaces directly opposite the museum entrance by the Great Western Railway Building. These spaces need to be pre-booked by calling 0151 478 4545. There are car parks in the nearby Liverpool ONE complex opposite the entrance to the Albert Dock. Q-Park Strand Street has 2000 underground spaces, Q-Park Gradwell Street has 560 multi-storey spaces and Q-Park John Lewis has 580 multi-storey spaces.
