Quingo Accessible Attractions: Docklands Canal Boat Trust, London

The Quingo Scooters team are always keen to encourage mobility scooter users to get out and about and visit interesting or unusual places. In our accessible attractions series, we aim to share some of the hidden gems; places that you wouldn’t usually visit or that you maybe thought weren’t accessible for your Quingo Scooter.

This week we’re looking at London in a completely different way and sharing information about the Dockland Canal Boat Trust.  London’s Docklands were originally built to cater for the rapidly expanding shipping industry but now comprises of sky-scraping offices and stylish restaurants and bars, all built around a vibrant cosmopolitan waterside setting.

Docklands Canal Boat Trust is a registered charity that provides boating holidays and day trips in a fully accessible canal boat, enabling you to see London from a completely different perspective. On the boat you’ll travel along the River Lee, River Stort and London’s Waterways.  The boat trips are suitable for all ages and provide a unique experience for everyone!

The Boat

Don’t worry if this is your first time on the waterways – the purpose built boat comes complete with a fully trained skipper and crew to do all the work for you whilst you take in the view! The friendly and knowledgeable crew of volunteers take care of steering, locks and mooring, so you’ll be in safe hands.

The boat operates from April until December, enabling you to make the most of the weather. It can be hired from one to five days Monday to Friday – whatever suits you.

The 70 foot broad beam boat includes the following facilities:

  • Ramp from quay to boat
  • Hydraulic lift for wheelchairs
  • Disabled Toilet and Shower
  • Toilet for Carers and Crew
  • Fully fitted kitchen
  • 4 bunks and 6 folding beds
  • Skipper’s cabin
  • Central heating
  • Day room
  • 240v electricity
  • Full safety gear including lifejacket and rings

Accessibility

There is a ramp and lift for mobility scooter access on all moorings on the tow path or pontoon, and there is ramp access nearby to exit the canal.

On board the boat itself, there are 2 bunks and 6 fold up beds. There is plenty of space for a few mobility scooters inside, and also outside at the bow. The toilet features support rails and a shower stool.

There is free parking at the home mooring for the duration of your trip.

Hall Farm Cottages – Norfolk Broads

If you fancy taking a trip to the rivers and lakes of the Norfolk Broads, Hall Farm Cottages offer fully accessible luxury 4* bed and breakfast or self-catering accommodation. The cottages are situated between the villages of Horning and Ludham, where you can fully appreciate the stunning natural beauty of one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK.

Hall Farm Cottages have been awarded National Accessibility Level 2 status, with many disabled groups choosing to stay there every year. All cottages have level paved access from the car park, and offer an open plan living area and en-suite wet-rooms equipped with handrails. Tudor Lodges – Cornwall

Located on the southwestern tip of England, the Tudor Lodges are set in two acres of Cornish Countryside. Their fully accessible lodges are award winning, and can sleep up to six people. The lodges are architect designed for full accessibility, and are in the perfect location to discover plenty of accessible sandy beaches. When staying at these lodges you’re in the perfect place to visit landmarks such as the Eden Project and Looe’s historic fishing port.

Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to get out and about to visit interesting or unusual places on their mobility scooters.

Over the last few blog posts we’ve been sharing some really interesting days out, places and attractions that you maybe thought weren’t accessible enough for your mobility scooter. Today we’re heading over to the Scottish western lowlands of Glasgow, to the Riverside Museum.

The Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel is home to over 3,000 objects that detail Glasgow’s rich past. From its days as a maritime powerhouse right through to Glasgow life in the mid-20th Century, there’s something for all ages and interests. You’ll be able to take a look at skateboards, locomotives, prams, vintage cars and so much more!

Here are a few highlights of what you definitely shouldn’t miss whilst you’re there:

Interactive Experience

The latest additions to the award-winning Riverside Museum are their new interactive experiences, new and imaginative ways of displaying their impressive collections.

The Riverside Museum now has over 90 large touch screen panels full of images, memories and films that tell their own incredible story of each individual object. Interactive streets will guide you down to the ‘shops’ that date back from 1895 to the 1980’s – including an Edwardian photography studio, a 1930’s Italian Café and a 1960’s garage.

All the different displays at the museum are grouped together by theme – to make sure you get the most out of the objects and their stories. You’ll find:

 Accessibility

The Riverside Museum has received many great reviews for accessibility. Throughout the displays the aisles are wide and there is plenty of space for you and your mobility scooter to move around freely. Accessibility has really been thought through at the museum exhibits – some of the exhibits have their own platform lifts enabling you to get up close and personal with the objects and their information panels.  There’s even lifts to get up on to the railway locomotives so you can experience the view of the drivers first hand!

In terms of parking there are dedicated blue badge parking bays close to the main entrance, or if you’re travelling by public transport there’s also a regular bus service from the city centre to the museum.

Through the museum there are a number of fully accessible, spacious WC’s. The café is also roomy, so you can stop for a spot of lunch in-between all the discovering. Staff are always on hand at the Riverside Museum and are happy to help with anything you may need.

Where Are The Best Accessible Holidays in Scotland?

As the weather slowly starts to get better and spring is coming in to full swing, you’ll be starting to look for ideas on where you can escape to on holiday this year. Here at Quingo Scooters we wanted to share with you some of the best mobility scooter accessible holidays, starting with Scotland.

The highlands can be a really inspiring and cultural place to holiday. With wild coastlines and some great architecture – there’s certainly something for everyone’s tastes.  Here are a few places we’ve picked out where you can enjoy a fully accessible, stress-free getaway:

WHERE ARE THE BEST ACCESSIBLE HOLIDAYS IN SCOTLAND? 2

Port Selma Lodges – Oban

Set in spectacular scenery in the Western Highlands, Port Selma Lodges are the perfect countryside retreat. The lodges are set 200 metres from the shore, 8 miles north of Oban. Here you have the best of both words – the lodges themselves are set in a very secluded position, however with a two minute journey into the small village of Benderloch you’ll find amenities such as a small supermarket, post office, petrol station and a great little tea room.

The lodges themselves sleep 4 people, each one having 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. One of which is an en-suite with a roll-in shower. The lodges are fully accessible to mobility scooters, but are also completely accessible for those accompanying too, so everyone will have a great retreat. With a spacious patio for outdoor dining, these lodges are a great place to enjoy a summer sunset.

Eildon Holiday Cottages – Melrose

Located on the Scottish borders, Eildon Holiday Cottages are award winning. A converted eighteenth century farm, the six self-catering cottages were designed from the idea that families with disabled members struggled to find suitable holiday accommodation with the right facilities. Eildon Holiday Cottages are great because they enable the whole family to holiday together and enjoy themselves with no differentiation. The Melrose high street is less than half a mile away and offers independent shops, cafes and restaurants, so there’s plenty to enjoy!

Five of the six cottages are graded Category 1, which is the best possible Tourist Board grading for accessibility. All of the cottages have at least one bedroom on the ground floor level which has either a bathroom or a wheel-in shower room. Two of the cottages have optional ceiling tracking hoists and pressure relieving mattress systems amongst other offerings, which can be organised by speaking to someone at Eildon Holiday Cottages prior to booking.

Motel One Edinburgh Princes – Edinburgh

If you’re not one the countryside and much prefer a city break, this one is for you. Right in the centre of Edinburgh, Motel One offers central accommodation that is affordable too. The hotel is two minutes away from Waverly Railway Station and the St. James Shopping Centre, allowing you to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city.

Although the hotel is situated above shops, there are two large lifts upon entry to take you up from the foyer to the hotel reception. When you reach reception it has a dropped counter and plenty of space to ensure easy access. Moving into the bar and lounge area this is also spacious and the dining area offers different types of seating to ensure you are in complete comfort. The 14 accessible bedrooms offer plenty of space to move around, and the en-suite bathrooms are fully accessible with grab bars throughout.

Quingo Accessible Attractions: Natural History Museum

Quingo Scooters are always encouraging users to get out and about to visit interesting or unusual places on their mobility scooter, especially places that you didn’t think were accessible enough.

Today we’re sharing with you somewhere that is on everyone’s list of places to visit – The Natural History Museum. The museum is a world-renowned centre of research, and it holds 80 million items for you to look at from five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. There are even specimens collected by Charles Darwin himself – great for the history fanatics!

With over five million visitors last year alone, the Natural History Museum has something for everyone. Though the museum is world famous for its collection of dinosaurs, you’ll be amazed by the diversity of the natural world! Here are some highlights of this accessible attraction to help you plan your trip.

David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef Dive

New for this year, the David Attenborough Great Barrier Reef Dive is a virtual reality journey. Here you can explore deep beneath the waves and into the world’s largest coral reef. The virtual reality experience enables you to see things you never thought possible, and to investigate one of nature’s most important ecosystems. This exhibition runs at various times throughout the day but more information can be found on the website.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Wildlife Photographer of the Year runs until the 2nd of May this year, and lets you see the natural world through intimate portraits and innovative technologies. Here you’ll get to see more than 100 of the best nature photographs, exhibited on sleek backlit panels. This one is great for any art fans in the group, as it’s something completely unique that you won’t get to see anywhere else.

Otherworlds – Visions of our Solar System

This is definitely an exhibition not to be missed. This photographic exhibition by Michael Benson enables you to take a journey through space, exploring the ins and outs of our solar system. The exhibition demonstrates the legacy of six decades of space exploration, and contains raw data provided by NASA itself. A free audio commentary is also available for this exhibition, to talk you through the cutting-edge research.

Accessibility

The museum throughout is generally accessible for mobility scooters. Upon entrance there is a ramp which takes you in to the reception and information desk, which has a lowered section for full accessibility.  There are lifts throughout the Natural History Museum to take you to the different exhibitions, and there are also fully accessible toilets throughout. The Museum has a restaurant and a café, and these are both spacious and accessible. If there are any special requirement throughout your trip staff are always on hand and more than happy to help.
