Last month, Great Britain’s up-and-coming Para Dressage riders travelled to the West Midlands for the Summer Festival of Para Dressage. One of these riders was Mari Akhurst – a Quingo Air user.
Quingo donated the Air scooter to Mari to support her amazing ambitions of being a Para Dressage rider. Mari was recently in touch to tell us all about how the summer festival went.
Dressage developments
This year saw the second ever running of this increasingly popular festival. It’s unique in the fact that it provides a platform for riders to compete, whilst offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a great introduction for anyone starting their Para Dressage journey.
However, this year saw an exciting development – the introduction of the Bronze Intro Championship for those participants who have not competed at a BD Para Equestrian Championship in the last 5 years. This welcomes rookies to the sport, as well as being open to riders from The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) groups too. It’s definitely an opportunity for Para Riders to get out there and be seen, as well as broadening their competitive horizons.
“Dream come true!”
22 year old Mari Akhurst competed in the Para Equestrian Silver Championships, taking the Grade Ia Silver and was awarded 73.55%. She was riding Glesni Owen’s 17 year-old son of Welt Hit II, Sky O’Hara.
Mari was absolutely over the moon, and she expressed her joy on her Facebook page. “Sky warmed up brilliantly and just did the best test ever! I was so proud of him. He helped me out enormously and showed what a great team we make! I finished the test on such a high, we couldn’t have done any more, either of us!”
Mari also expressed how relieved she was that the two had improved drastically: “The whole picture was so much of an improvement especially the contact that we have always struggled with. When I found out we had won I was on cloud ten and so was Sky! Then to find out we had won by over 5% and had over 76% from one judge (the C judge), was the icing on the cake! Out last ever Silver Championships too, and we went out with a bang. Another dream come true!”
