UK Cities: Best accessible Christmas shopping

Planned right, Christmas shopping can be a lot of fun. The stores pull out all the stops for customers at this time of year. And a shopping trip can be just the thing to get you in the festive mood.

The UK’s cities have a wonderful array of great shopping experiences. From world-famous stores selling some of the biggest brands on the planet, to small independent stalls, they’ve got it all. We’ve picked out four of our favourite UK cities to bring you Quingo Scooters’ guide to the best accessible Christmas shopping in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and London.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh has it all. Grand gothic architecture, a castle that dominates the skyline, great galleries and world-class shopping. It’s even got its own mini-mountain, Arthur’s Seat, slap bang in the centre of the Scottish capital.

But if you’re looking for somewhere to come and do a bit of last-minute Christmas shopping, then there are few better places. Edinburgh has more than its fair share of the big high street names and for these you’ll need to join the throngs on Prince’s Street.

It’s the main shopping street in the city, and if you’re after a bit of luxury then head to Jenners, also known as the Harrods of the North. The team there now have a dedicated app for customers with mobility needs. The app is designed to help you to contact the store team and customise your visit according to your needs.

If you want to escape the crowds for a while, East Princes Street Gardens also now has an accessible path. Or, head to the accessible Scottish National Gallery cafe with its views of the gardens.

Birmingham

Any discussion of the shopping scene in Birmingham has to start with the iconic Bullring, long the commercial heart of this great city. Today, the remarkable Selfridges building with its flowing silver lines is a real magnet for Christmas shoppers. It’s a fantastic space and well worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for an accessible shopping centre experience.

But Birmingham isn’t all about the Bullring. Another fantastic building – the Mailbox – is now also home to a huge Harvey Nichols. You can access all floors via a lift, direct from the building’s own car park (which has 16 Blue Badge holder spaces).

If you’re looking for something a bit more local and low key, then head to the city’s beautiful Jewellery Quarter. Remarkably, over 40% of British jewellery is made here. So, it is the perfect place to browse for unique, locally made presents for loved ones. It is generally accessible, although some of the smaller studios are not. Manchester

Where Birmingham has the Bullring, Manchester has the Arndale Centre. Once again, it’s the place to go for all the big names. And as you’d expect it is fully accessible and easy to get around for those of us who use a mobility scooter.

For something a little different, then Manchester has no shortage of independent shops too. The Manchester Craft and Design Centre is worth a visit if you want to see local makers at work (although there are no lifts to the first floor).

And for a spot of luxury, head to the Royal Exchange. This historic arcade is packed with independent boutiques and shops selling all kinds of luxury brands. The building dates from the early 1800s, but most of the stores here are accessible to all. The Royal Exchange team do suggest you give individual stores a call before your visit however in order to double check.

London

Where do you start Christmas shopping in a city as vast as London? Well, we had to begin in historic Covent Garden. The area is full of designer shops and Covent Garden Market Hall itself is a wonderful place to pick up a gift. The whole market is fully accessible via ramped access. 

Another great area to explore is around Portobello Road market. It’s packed with antique shops, second-hand stalls and has a great atmosphere. Our tip is to head down there early in the day before it gets too busy.

If you’re up for a truly upmarket experience, then look no further than Knightsbridge. Of course, it’s home to the most famous department store in world – Harrods. There are lifts to all floors, but this is a world-famous store and so be prepared for busy crowds.

Knightsbridge is full of high-end stores, but we also love Alfie’s Antiques Market. It is one of the best in London, and the ground floor is completely accessible, as well as parts of the first and second floors.

For children, Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year. So, if you’ve got little ones of your own, or grandchildren visiting, what can you do to make their Christmas even more special?

To help you out, we’ve picked some of our favourite Christmas kids’ accessible activities. From an Elf Emporium and Gingerbread House to a trip to one of the UK’s biggest shopping destinations, there’s plenty to choose from. Santa’s Grotto and Elf Emporium

The Milky Way Adventure Park near Clovelly in North Devon offers a magical and fun-filled day out for all the family this festive season.

In Santa’s Grotto and the Elf Emporium on 7, 8, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 December you can meet Father Christmas, decorate gingerbread, write a letter to Santa and make Reindeer food. In the lovely Buzzlewick’s Elf Emporium, Buzzlewick the elf and friends will be helping father Christmas to sort and load children’s letters ready for him to take back to the North Pole. As well as lots of festive fun, there are plenty of other activities to take part in, including Ziggy’s Blast Quest, indoor Droid Destroyer dodgems, a mini train ride and an indoor pay area. If you want to put a bit of sparkle into your Christmas with kids, then an accessible light trail is a magical way to spend a few hours. One of our favourites is at the spectacular Blenheim Palace.

We particularly love this one because of its incredible scale. There’s an aerial light show, an illuminated waterfall, and even glowing flowers among the snowdrops. It’s stunning. There’s also a wonderful Water Terrace light finale, family rides, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows to choose from.

There’s also Alice in the Palace – a topsy-turvy wonderland that brings the magic of Alice In Wonderland to life.

The Gingerbread House

York Mansion House is bursting with festive fun and flavour this year – it’s being transformed into a Gingerbread house!

Bring the family along for the day and immerse yourselves in the delightful displays and decorations. It really is a feast for the senses that includes a Gingerbread Trail and dressing up for kids, mulled wine for the adults. And, of course – gingerbread.

The Gingerbread house is accessible and open until 22 December. You don’t need to book in advance. But we recommend visiting the Mansion House website for more information about prices and opening times, before your trip.

Shopping is pretty much unavoidable at this time of year. And if you’re in the London area, there’s a good chance that you’ll find yourself at the gigantic Westfield shopping centre at some point. Of course, picking up those last-minute Christmas gifts with kids in tow can get stressful. So why not book at trip to Santa’s Snowflake Grotto while you’re there?

We’ve picked this one out for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s just a fun experience for the little ones. They get to meet Santa in his cabin, receive a gift and even make their own Christmas decoration.

But of course, we’ve also chosen it for its accessibility. The team at Westfield have made the attraction as accessible as possible, and any helpers get in for free. Accessible getaways abroad: Accessible Christmas Markets

Is there anything better to get you in a festive mood than a Christmas market? They bring together everything that is best about the time of the year. Great food and drink, local handicrafts and a warm atmosphere. And because they are often outside, they are one of the most accessible activities you can enjoy this time of year.

But while we’ve seen a rise in the number of the markets over recent years, they’re not all created equal. And at a time of year when time and money is at a premium, you don’t want to be wasting either. So, to help you out, here is Quingo Scooters guide to the very best and most accessible Christmas markets out there.

Christkindlesmarkt, Nuremberg

Nuremberg is home to the Christmas market to end all Christmas markets. Germany is synonymous with Christmas markets, and you are spoiled for choice right across the country. But this is beautiful market in the city’s Hauptmarkt is the real deal.

It’s been around since at least the 17th century, but it could be far older. It is rich in tradition, from the Christkind parade that kicks it off, to the stalls themselves. These are packed with plenty of local delicacies and handicrafts. The space between them is also easily navigable on your scooter.

If you’re looking for a souvenir, then we recommend you find a rauschgoldengel. These golden angel decorations are the symbol of Christmas here. And while you’re hunting for one, buy yourself a Nuremberg sausage to keep you going!

Vánoční trhy, Old Town Square, Prague

Truly one of our favourite destinations on the planet, we’ve featured a getaway in the Czech capital before in Accessible Getaways Abroad: Accessible Prague.

Prague is great at any time of the year, and although it can get seriously cold, it’s well worth heading there for Christmas. Of course, expect plenty of crowds – this is Prague after all, and the Old Town Square is busy 365 days a year. But don’t let that put you off.

Prepare for a sensory overload. This is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, and when the Christmas market is running it is a riot of light, colour, sights and smells. You can buy anything here, from ceramics to wooden handicrafts. There is even a stable with a real live donkey!

If you’re feeling peckish, try some pastries (trdelník) or roasted hams (pražská šunka). And of course, there is always plenty of great Czech beer or warm mulled wine on hand to wash it all down.

St Nicholas Fair, York

Something a little closer to home now, and a market in one of the UK’s most beautiful and historic cities. York’s St Nicholas Fair is a traditional Christmas market that is full of local Yorkshire delicacies from local producers. It recently won an award for Best Large Speciality Market, and we think it’s well deserved.  

Once again, you’re surrounded by the smell of mulled wine and warm mince pies as you browse the stalls. But what makes York so special is the stunning medieval surroundings. It’s hard to imagine a more Christmassy setting. And if the market isn’t enough, you could also head to The Grand Hotel on Station Rise to have Afternoon Tea in The Grand Boardroom (with Christmas carols!). There are accessible lifts to all floors.

St Nicholas Fair is fully accessible and runs through to 22nd December.

The Christmas village, Hafnarfjörður

We can’t talk about Christmas markets without mentioning this very special town in Iceland. It might not be one of the biggest Christmas markets, but we love it for its uniquely Icelandic atmosphere. Hafnarfjörður is now Iceland’s third largest town and is close enough to central Reykjavik to be easily accessible. It truly comes to life around Christmas, when it opens its own Christmas village in the old town.

This must be one of the few Christmas markets where you can relax in a geothermal pool before heading off to browse the stalls. These feature plenty of traditional Icelandic crafts, as well as lots of local delicacies to keep you going. We recommend the delicious laufabrauð flatbreads, or some tasty piparkökur ginger snaps.

The market is only 20 minutes by bus from the centre of Reykjavik and is completely accessible to all.

Dresden holds the record for the oldest official Christmas market – they first held one there way back in 1434!

A major highlight of one of the most beautiful countries on the planet: Auckland makes for the perfect accessible getaway. Of course, it has its fair share of hills (this is New Zealand, after all!). But despite this, there are plenty of great experiences for those of us who use a mobility scooter.

The natural world is never far away wherever you go in New Zealand. And Auckland is no different, even though it is one of the country’s major cities. There is a strong maritime tradition here too, and the city is known as ‘The City of Sails’.

Here’s our take on some of the best accessible things to do in Auckland, New Zealand.

Get the lie of the land from the Sky Tower

It is one of the most famous, popular and accessible attractions in the city. The Sky Tower can get busy, but it is well worth visiting. There is an accessible lift to the top, and the views are simply breath-taking.

It’s an excellent way to get a lie of the land, and we’d suggest you do it early on in your visit. It’s 192 metres high and is popular with base jumpers who leap from the top on a wire. While that might not be your thing, it is a spectacular place to start your getaway. The Sky Café is also an excellent spot for a bite to eat while you take in the 360º views.

Go sailing on Auckland harbour

Auckland is one of those cities that really makes sense from the water. They love their boats here, and you can take a wonderful boat tour of the harbour. The team at Fullers do an excellent accessible tour that lasts around an hour and a half. To book, get in touch with them here.

Get moving at MOTAT

If you’re travelling with family, then Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology is great fun. The first thing to say is that the majority of the museum is fully accessible, including the spectacular aviation exhibition. If that wasn’t enough incentive, it’s also free to those of us with mobility needs.

It’s a remarkable place, full of displays that tell the story of how Kiwis have approached the challenges of transport in their remarkable country. If you love planes, then the aviation collection is second to none. But with over 300,000 exhibits here, there’s more than enough to keep you entertained.

Explore Parnell Village

Auckland is a great city for foodies, and one of the highlights is the wonderful La Cigale French market. It’s actually not just French produce here but has a cosmopolitan European vibe that is a lot of fun. It’s a street market, and so is accessible, but with the usual caveats around kerbs.

The market is in the Parnell Village area, which itself is a great place to explore. So, once you’ve picked up some top quality French produce from La Cigale, we’d recommend you reward yourself. Take a gentle tour through the Parnell Rose Gardens, followed by a coffee and something sweet at the Chocolate Boutique. It’s the perfect Auckland day.

Getting to Auckland

There’s no getting around it: Auckland is a long haul from the UK. And of course, this presents its own challenges for those of us with limited mobility. But Auckland is well worth the 23 hour flight. And there is so much to explore in the rest of New Zealand that it has to be on everyone’s bucket list.

There are regular flights from the London airports, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. And while they all feature stopovers, it is always worth double checking how long each transfer lasts – they can be anything from a few hours to a day. Once again, just make sure you let the airline know of your personal mobility requirements when you book your flight.

In Auckland airport, you’ll find an excellent special assistance service to help you through the terminal. The most convenient way to then get into the city is to use their accessible shuttle service. You will need to book it at least a couple of days before you arrive however. Just give them a call on +64 9625 5599.

Public transport in Auckland is also generally accessible. Almost all the buses have ramps, and some are even so-called ‘kneeling buses’. Trains are also accessible: just use the middle carriage of any three car train or the second and fifth carriage of six car trains. It is no surprise that in a country as vast as the USA, there are thousands of wonderful museums to explore. So where do you start? And most importantly, which are the most accessible for those of us who use a mobility scooter?

Well, to help you out, Quingo Scooters has picked out the five most accessible American museums. Here are our top tips.

The California Academy of Science

We love this museum. California is blessed with plenty of wonderful museums and art galleries, but there is something special about this place.

You’ll find it in Golden Gate Park and it is truly unique. They claim it is the only museum in the world that has a rainforest, an aquarium, a natural history museum and a planetarium. And it really does feel as if all life on earth is here, in a truly beautiful and innovative space.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

It can be hard to know where to begin with the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. It is so vast, and its exhibits are built to a scale that almost defies human comprehension.

But it is, without doubt, one of the most impressive museums in the US. If you have an interest in the history of space flight then you’ll love the opportunity to see machines like the huge Saturn V rocket. If you’re lucky, you might even get to meet an astronaut!

The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA)

The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) is the greatest collection of modern art on the planet, full stop. And, as it should be, it is also completely accessible to all. Every gallery is fully accessible and the team there are always happy to help visitors, whatever their particular needs.

With a collection of over 200,000 works of art under one roof, it is almost impossible to pick out a favourite gallery, let alone exhibit. Every room you go through brings new wonders.

Currently there is a groundbreaking exhibition of art that reflects on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Meanwhile in another room, you’ll find Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, or The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali. Truly breathtaking.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

A beautiful house and estate on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a wonderful place to spend time. It was the winter estate of the wealthy James Deering. And by European standards, the house might not seem so old – it was built between 1914 and 1922

But this place is a great example of the architecture of the so-called ‘Gilded Age’ and the perfect place to get a sense of how people lived in Miami at the time. We recommend spending time looking around the house and the collections in its museum. The ground floor is accessible, and you can take a lift to the second floor too.

But for us the real joy of Vizcaya is its gorgeous formal gardens. They are a remarkable contrast to the natural subtropical forest of the local area and are well worth exploring. They are also fully accessible. Find out more here, where there is also a map of accessible areas of Vizcaya.

The Henry Ford, Detroit

The history of America is one that’s been defined by innovation, industry and invention. And so, a visit to the Henry Ford museum in Detroit is a chance to see what a remarkable impact this has had on the world. But the Henry Ford museum doesn’t just celebrate the life and achievements of the American industrialist. It is based around three fascinating zones.

Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is a chance to find out more about some of the country’s greatest inventors. Greenfield Village is a living museum that features everything from Edison’s workshop to four working farms. And the Ford Rouge Factory Tour is a chance to see how cars are produced on a real factory floor.

As a general rule, most modern American museums do a great job of making their exhibits accessible. But as always, we recommend that you call or email ahead and discuss any particular mobility requirements you might have.

One final tip if you’re hiring a car: you can use your Blue Parking Badge in some states in the US. But our advice is always to double check, as the picture varies from state to state.
